But are all businesses as diligent as the one you worked for ?

They are all audited heavy by both the industry and the customers (the supermarkets) you also get random audits where they will arrive unannounced and expect to be taken to the production area straight away therefore no time to prepare or change anything.

In my place of work they also wear gloves so I image the controls where they are not wearing gloves are even tighter.

Of course different factory's will get different results from their audits but anything bad found I assume they would be shut down until it was resolved.

I work in the food industry. It is gross misconduct to not wash your hands after going to the toilet it would be instant dismissal. When you open the main exit door from the toilets you automatically get anti bacterial gel on your hands.

Can you explain how this works? Is the gel shot out of the door handle? I can't picture it....

its a long tall handle (bit like a small towel rail) I believe the gel must be stored stored in the handle. At the back of the handle is a metal plate with holes in which the gel comes through. When you put your hand around the handle and pull you get gel on you hands from through the holes.

Its not foolproof and if you really wanted to you I suppose you could open the door without touching the back of the handle but I can't see why anyone would do that, plus like I said before you get to production areas you will go through many more hand washes anyway.

Not all factories are the same it seems, there was a show on TV about zero hour contracts and one factory that made pitta and naan breads had several issues.

Workers not supplied with adequate clothing and told to share boots from lockers. But on the shop floor partly open packets were removed to a trolley to be repacked later, but items that had fallen on the floor were put into the same trolley. When the reporter asked how they knew which ones to repack and which to throw they were told they pack them all.

The factory supplied most of the supermarkets.

Wish I could here a horrible story about Cadburys Fruit & Nut as it really would help the diet. ha ha

The maximum allowable number of insect fragments per 100g of chocolate is 90, or an average of 60 if one is examining several 100g samples

Sharing of shoes whilst not ideal is for the workers has no bearing on the food hygiene side, as long as the shoes were cleaned to procedures, the sharing of them is irrelevant. Same with the clothing, what clothing were they short? if it was underclothing they weren't supplied with not an issue (re food hygiene) as long as they had the necessary clean overcoats.

Did the programme show you how to get to the food processing areas? I guess not as it wouldn't make good tv, there would have been more than one hand wash on the route in along with other procedures to follow (hair nets etc)

The food on the floor is bad , I can't comment on that and I am not sticking up for the company in question they do not sound like a very good employer but there is a difference between being fair to your staff (not all companies have to be) and following the food hygiene procedures (all companies have to comply).

I am surprised that they supply supermarkets as supermarkets generally have guidelines you need to follow re staff welfare, they are all different but an example would be a confidential whistle blowing procedure, the company in question clearly do not supply a supermarket with this policy.
