That wasn't the case with us. We wasn't asked about any benefits, all we had to do was confirm that my husband had previously received treatment for a back problem. It was a standard form that the retailer (Premier Stores Bolton Lancs) had. Maybe not all retailers have them. We have never had any comeback from customs and excise regarding the purchase, so as far as I'm aware it's all above board.

Most bed retailers will know about the VAT exemption forms. I consulted Customs & Excise on this matter, and they told me that the buyer has to be registered disabled, and that the bed/mattress has to give significant benefit to the disabilty.

55kg density is the lowest you should go for good support, and is more for people who like a soft mattress. However I should point out that memory foam isn't really suitable for people who like a very soft mattress. 85kg is really at the very upper limit, and many people might find it too firm. The layer underneath the memory foam (reflex foam/pocket springs/open coil springs etc...) will also make a big difference to the firmness of the mattress.

If you don't like to be too hot in bed then don't go for memory foam deeper than 2 1/2" as you will sink into it and become engulfed. If the mattress you choose is reflex/memory foam, then you may want to go for a mattress that has a coolmax cover. If the mattress contains springs then you shouldn't need to as long as the memory foam isn't too deep.

Normally if a retailer isn't allowed to mention the manufacturer it is because they are seconds. However if they are only very slight seconds then they may still be worth buying. Ask the seller if this is the case.
