Anywhere big like debenhams. Students always come and go in the debenhams i work because they transfewr down for christmas/summer ect then go back to work up wherever they study the rest of time. Theyre quite flexible.

Yeah. Debenhams were pretty good for me. I worked from the start of November until Christmas eve, then went back home for xmas etc. I'm suprised they took me but they did!

Quite often with xmas temps they just continue to rota you on assuming you carry on and work right thru, well that happened quite a bit in the bit i worked in.

If you don't mind to do any cleaning, NHS hospitals are the good places to go. I know some postgrad international students work at 3 NHS hospitals. All of them work weekends only, 12-19 hours per week. One is a nursing assistant (she has to clean patients' bodies, etc) -- around £7 per hour. The second one is a cleaner - sweeping the floor, cleaning toilets, mopping, etc -- £6 sth per hour. The third one is a food handler -- serving food to patients, £6 sth per hour.

Benefit: NHS pay 1.5 times on Saturday and 2 times on Sunday -- eg., basic rate is £6. Saturday working is £9 and Sunday working is £12. (Edit: no benefit for university job and not the secure income)

Sick and holiday payment too. Not sure in details.

I personally work as a part-time researcher for a project in my school, £12.50 per hour. I also occassionally work as a teaching assistant for a postgraduate unit, £21 per hour.

    Hope this helps.
  • I worked at a bookies in my gap year, the long hours (open up to 14 hours a day now) mean that its possible to fit shifts around uni. It's not complicated & some of them have graduate schemes you can fast track through if you've got experience.
  • I really enjoyed working at halfords when i was a student, the hours were pretty good, the pay wasnt amazing but there were quite often bargains to be had and they give a bit of discount and also a 'trade' card at some stores (entitles employee to super cheap parts prices, always handy if your running a car).

My daughter started her first jear last Saturday (just about stopped sobbing) and during the course of the day we looked around the uni again, and at the library she was handed a list of vacancies in the library - 10 in total, flexi hours, obviously term time only from between 10-20 hours and about 6.50 an hour. She has now applied for one, so fingers crossed - she has also applied at WH Smiths, Pizza Hut, Blockbuster video etc. But her dad and I felt that the library would probably be the best and safest for her. There is probably lots of student jobs around the Uni itself.

I am currently at University, have been working with a recruitment consultancy for over a yr, office based work and alot easier than being on my feet all day. I find most office based work (not call centres) to be
    very flexible around timetables
They understand course commitments, eg time off for coursework etc.
Decent pay, yes you can get more in a Call centre but you lose flexibility
I had the opportunity to work with them full time over summer which helped
have also been offered a chance to take on a graduate position with them internally, so great for my own future prospects
