Best place for a student to work?

Options
I was wondering if there was a top ten list of fav/best student employers for new university entrants?

Secondly, who were the worst bottom ten student employers !!!!???

Feel free to tell of your experiences and recommendations, including rates per hour and working conditions.

  • Most people I know who worked (which wasn't many as Imperial College seem to work their students 9-5 and then some) just worked for the student union, either as bar staff or stewards for events. The only work I did was Outreach stuff where I helped mentoring summer schools and other events during the year.
  • My daughter just started work at The Hilton Hotel in Manchester. Only casual work but great perks - after 3 months she gets huge hotel discounts along with discounts for Apple, Days out like Alton Towers etc, Orange and some others I can't remember. Good training and conditions and free meals/£4 towards taxi fares when finishing after 11pm.
  • If you have sense tell them to look at a financial institution or office job

Once your in and trained they are normally very flexible and the pay and benefits !!!! all over bar work
  • You'd be needing something that allowed for weekend and/or evening work, depends how much money you need. If you're only looking for weekend work then you have quite a lot of choice with a variety of shops, bars, call centres, hotels - basically everywhere. The challenge will be to find somewhere that will hire you to work only on the weekends. If you need to work evenings too then you can rule out shops.

However, if you need a job then I think pretty much anywhere that will take you should be enough.

Sainsbury's do student contracts. 10% discount after probationary period, 15% at certain times of the year. Access to reduced food, DS even got free food on certain evening shifts!
Unsociable hours payments and extra for working Bank Hols (according to which type of contract you are on). Pays £5.75 per hr for over 18s.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
  • I work at Superdrug, which is good, not great...

You get 5.35/hour with a 10% discount on all products (including perfumes, ideal xmas pressies!), it is going up to 30% on Superdrugs own range in November i think.

Not sure about hours though...i average about 15-20 but might be different elsewhere.

Again I reiterate work for a bank, financial services firm or something like that

I did and the hours etc were far btter than anywere else

    They were flexible
    they paid more than shops
    annual bonus
    free shares
    paid full sick and holidays
the chance to train for professional qualifications
    good holiday entitlement
career breaks etc all available for exams
    All bank holidays

IMO a basic shop, bar, restaurant job etc will never be able to match the above
  • Thanx for all the tips so far........again....places to absolutely stay clear of?
