Tablet - Currys - Repair Gone wrong

Hey all,

This is not my issue, more for a family member, so limited info, but hoping for some helping points....

Family member purchased a 'Asus Tablet' from Currys around 7 months ago.......
Item believed to develop a fault in that it would not turn on...
She boxed up the tablet in its original box, however.............................
She put the usb lead in the box, but not the original lead, it was a different lead.
The USB lead is the industry standard USB-Micro-B cable (phones/tablets)....
We all know that u can use any Micro-B usb lead to charge phones, tablets, etc......

Anyway, Currys called her to say:
They are unable to do anything under warranty as she has been using the wrong cable, not the cable supplied with the unit...
Therefore, Currys will not honour the warranty.
On a 2nd Note...
Currys state for the tablet to be sent back to her, there will be a £45 charge.....

So as its stands, she has no tablet, and an un-reasonable cost of £45 to get her tablet back....

Does that sound normal, a £45 charge ????
On the note of the wrong cable, anyone with a brain knows the cable is just a cable, but if you want to get picky, its easy for them to say 'Asus tablets use Purple usb leads', and you sent back a black lead....
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I presume she took it to a store?

What was said in store? What paperwork did she sign?

Bear in mind that warranty and consumer statutory rights are different things ... she can still make a claim under the CCRs, but as it is more than 6 months* since purchase then Currys can make it a requirement that she proves the fault is inherent. (By way of an engineer's report).

    * Exact timeline is important ... when exactly did she report the fault (with respect to purchase date)?

£45 sounds like the fixed fee that Asus themselves charge to return no fault found items, this sounds like Asus themselves have tested the tablet with a genuine cable and found it to be working fine.

There are vast differences in the quality of manufacture supplies USB cables and after market ones briefly explained here http://lifehacker.com/cables-can-significantly-impact-the-charging-speed-of-y-1532784722
I've seen it hundreds of times with people using after market cables to charge tablets and it's almost always caused by the cable.

She took it to the Currys Store, but currys don't deal in-house, they send it to there central workshop place where they do repairs or then send off to manufactors, etc etc.....
    Un-sure if she signed anything....

The lead she put in the Asus box was a Microsoft lead (that's what was said to her).
2 Devices she has is a Windows phone and the Asus tablet....

I understand a lot about cables, tablets, electronics, etc, and unfortunately for her, she didn't bring the tablet to me before hand.....
I just thought £45 seemed a bit steep to get something back.

    cheers for replies

I think you mean CRA ;) Done it myself a few times, fingers just type out of habit :rotfl:

OP, was she given a waiver to sign before sending it off? Was she given the terms of the warranty at any point? If so, do the terms cover this scenario with their provisions? If so, did she ask them for a repair under warranty? If not, what did she ask for?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

    Cheers for replies all,
Am gonna guess that she must have signed paperwork, as it would make sense for Currys to cover themselves in that sense...

I wont see her until Sunday, so i'll get more info then....
But for now, this thread is complete :):) case closed!
