    I think they all subcontract.
I have a friend who was a self employed kitchen fitter before he retired, and he got work from b&q; wickes; ikea, ete etc all the time.

    That's right. They do.

They'll say £1800 to fit, then they'll need to move electrics etc and charge more for that etc etc.

In my case that is fair enough, the house hasn't been looked at for a long time, the sockets/mains sinks into wall and is directly above cooker.

I dunno. Maybe I should manage it myself but I also work full time :(

By base you mean subject to increase?

It won't cover any electrical costs, that was about £600 extra in our case. I should still have the details of the installer they use, if you want I can try to dig them out and you can get him to quote direct: should be cheaper than Ikea as he can take off their commission.

In our case we just went through Ikea but as mentioned above we were able to get 7% off the installation cost as well using the discounted vouchers

    You need to budget for:

Cost of units, worksurfaces & appliances
Preparation for installation (removing old kitchen, any work on ceilings/floors/walls, services - water/gas/electrics)
    Fitting
    Decorating

I recently spoke to someone who runs a high-end bespoke kitchen company who reckoned that Ikea units represented better value for money than some of the considerably more expensive brands.

I'm not sure what you mean by manage it? You might find install costs go up a canny bit if your electrics are all over. You'll still end up dealing with the tradesmen etc.

I reckon ikea will charge you about £2.5k to fit, you could save £1k going direct to a fitter.

To be honest I wish I'd talked to the fitter before ordering from Ikea, he was able to give some better solutions regarding plumbing and pipework so could have had a drawer (we wanted) where the Ikea planner said it was impossible due to pipework. Also was able to return a couple of things for refunds as he was able to work things in so he didn't need them.

That's another cost to consider too, moving pipework because of the lack of service void on ikea kitchens.

I'm going to post contrary to what some of the above posts say.

We had a new Ikea kitchen installed this year. The installation cost Ikea gave was what we paid. There was no additional cost to move the water pipes or the electrics because, as my fitter said, every new kitchen will need something moving, it's all part and parcel of the fit. Because all the fitters know that unless you're replacing one Ikea kitchen with another, all the pipework will need to be dropped to the floor to fit behind Ikea cupboards, because 99% of the time, existing pipe work is a foot and a half off the floor.

Also, going direct to the fitter won't save you any money - 100% of what Ikea charge you for fitting goes to the fitter. They do not take any commission. That came from the Ikea Area Manager for kitchens and was backed up by the fitters themselves.

Unlike B&Q who slap a huge mark up on the fitting costs. 200% in some cases.

We were extremely impressed with both Ikea and the fitters. They were very quick at installing, cleaned up after themselves everyday and their attention to detail was astonishing. The finish on our kitchen is amazing.

We had nearly 30 cupboards and drawer banks, lighting in every cupboard and drawer, new pipework, new electrics, re-siting of the cooker hood and a couple of custom built 'franken-cupboards'. Cost just over £7k fitted.

ETA: Oh, and that included ripping out the old kitchen and taking it all away.

There was no additional charge for moving pipework, it was part of the installation cost.

Well, I've paid for my kitchen and installation. The supplementary works are adding to the cost of course. I'm a !!!! moneysaver :-(
