Humax satellite boxes.

Options
So we are going to leave Sky soon and switch to a Humax box. Lots of secondhand ones around, 1100s and 1010s 1TB seem to be what we want. So is the 1100s a later version of 1010s and do all the 1010s boxes have Freetime or just the later ones as it does not appear in all the pics and details?

Got my 1100s from Richer sounds for about £200 (can't remember exact cost) and paid £20 extra for the RS extended 6 warranty.
The 1100s is the later model and is a nice compact size, is not noisy, low power consumption in standby mode and works well. I would recommend it.
  • Well I bought a secondhand 1100s for £115 on Gumtree. It is nearly a year old but never used as he left his partner soon after buying it.
Plugged in and working fine only thing I have found is that you cannot leave a channel you are recording to watch another! Don't know what that is about but I will investigate further.
I have also found I cannot watch recordings on the Sky box without it being connected to the dish. Temporary leads out of the window at the moment.

It depends what you're looking for. If you have SMART TV then it's pretty pointless getting a Humax box as you can just attach a £50 external HDD and record away to your hearts content.

If you have a standard TV then a Humax box can be what gives it the "smart" functionality.

It;s probably better to go into PC world/John Lewis and try some Humax boxes out before deciding on what you like.
  • Did you schedule the recording or just press the record button, the record button means I am saving this whilst watching , change the channel it will assume you don't want to watch therefore don't want to record. Plus have you got two feeds to the box ? One lead means you can record and watch two channels on the same transponder only.

Irrelevant , the OP has a Humax box already, plus satellite boxes can receive more channels than a "Smart" TV and catchup services. Freeview and Freesat are as much use as Apple's walled garden.
external HDDs are useless too since you can't remove them and watch the said recordings anywhere other than the TV that recorded them.

Yes I did press record whilst watching and later wanted to watch something else whilst still recording. I haven't tried switching channels whilst on a programmed recording yet.

I bought two new Humax 1100s 1tb boxes about 8 months ago cost about £210 each from Amazon. Having problems with both and only way to solve is to unplug and restart. Problems range from loss of sound, programme list shows no programmes, restarts on their own, recordings dissapear then reappear after restart, the list is more extensive but I can't remember anymore at the moment.

To be honest both my Wife and I wish we had stayed with Sky even though they are robbing whatsits as having to have so many different remotes, we also have NOW on both tv's, that it's become too complicated, pretty sure younger folks wouldn't have the same problem so may just be me.

I hade this problem a while back with a Humax Freevitw box - turned out the unit had a dodgy power supply and every time the hard drive tried to record anything the supply cut out. New power supply fitted at the local repair shop fixed all problems - yours could be the same.
