unauthorised cash withdrawals, card not received

    As for the account being a second Classic Plus account, that is very unusual as TSB only allow one Classic Plus account per customer.

    One sole and one joint ( see T&C in post above).

    As I said in my previous, it may be that TSB simply won't pay interest on the second sole account or will downgrade it to a Classic account?

    Why are bank cards/PIN letters not sent recorded? This way they would have to be hand delivered to the home owner and signed for.

    Neither cost effective nor convenient for many recipients.

    Cheaper overall to pay out on a few frauds.

    ^This. You wouldn't believe how many cards get sent out on a daily basis: new cards, replacements for loss and theft, replacements for damage, cards retained by ATMs, routine renewal as a security procedure, cards being upgraded to contactless or personalised. Recorded delivery would make the whole thing an order of magnitude more costly and at any rate most people wouldn't be at home to take delivery.

    In-branch card printing is available as an emergency option for people who think their postbox is unsafe.

    When they reject the complaint escalate immediately to the FOS.

    If you'd previously used the PIN number issued with the card then I could see their point. On the basis it was never received you have a very strong case to get fully reimbursed.

  • I had the same problem with tbs ( but a cc). £1200 spent before I even received my card. Luckily it was spent on a hotel at the other end of the country on a day I could prove I was working. It was sorted but I did wonder how it was done- could only think it was done internally. I never used the card.

    The cost would, apparently, exceed the savings from reduced fraud.
  • I find it extremely unlikely that a fraudster would just happen to know you'd opened a new account, knew you'd transferred £2,000 into it and knew that there was a card and PIN on its way.

    Of course it's an external mail box as well.

  • This struck a chord with me because a heck of a long time (20+ years) ago a similar thing happened although in a student hall of residence where there were open/unsecure boxes in the lobby for each room.

    A new card and pin arrived and was obviously stolen from my box. £400 was removed from my account which back then (and to a student at that) was a lot of money. The police were not interested and my bank (TSB) pretended to be sympathetic but wouldn't give me a penny.

    The irony is that if something like that happened to me now, whilst I wouldn't miss the money anything like as much, I suspect I'd end up with a better outcome.

    External mailbox, shared mailboxes whatever it might be the bank has responsibility for the security of our money. Is it allowed to just throw two letters on to the doorstep of a family that is on holiday for example? An internet based retailer has responsibility for items it ships until those items are safely inside the customers house. I can't believe the terms for bank accounts are less secure that that!
