Lloyds Under 19s Account (HELP!)

Hi, I'm an international student who has an under 19's account. I need to pay my tuition fee (£13500) and accommodation (£4000) by online visa debit card payment. The problem is, I've never done this before and I'm worried there is a limit. Last year my father did an international bank transfer, but as we don't have the complete bank details to internationally transfer for my new accommodation, we decided it would be cheaper and faster to transfer all the fees to my Lloyds account.

What gets me worried is that I read in Lloyd's website that there is a limit of £500 for online payment specifically for Under 19's account. So now I'm stuck because I don't know if I should let my dad transfer all that money to my account or not as I'm worried that the money will be stuck in my account due to the limit.

I hope someone can help clarify (especially if they're a LLoyds representative) if my account could successfully make an online payment of £13500 and £4000 in the same day? Thank you so much!!!!!

Edit - I decided to post here after I couldn't find Lloyd's customer service e-mail, because people seem to receive help and bank representative do pop in the forum for customer service. Pretty neat, UK.

but as we don't have the complete bank details to internationally transfer for my new accommodation,

Can you not ask for them?
  • How old are you? If over 18 you may be able to upgrade to a classic, or if you are not eligible for that, a basic account.
Then the normal limits of £25k for a faster payment limit applies.

It costs £40 to internationally transfer to different accounts each time, so it would be a lot cheaper to transfer to just one account (my under 19) instead of two. I've sent my accommodation an e-mail but they have not replied yet :( They tend to reply very late, and I'm already flying back to the UK next week! :/

I'm 19. Planning to upgrade once I arrive in the UK. Unfortunately I'm still overseas, and need to pay my tuition/accommodation. I just wanted to know if my under 19 account is indeed limited to £500 per day (does this mean I can't pay my fees?)

Does it need to be paid tomorrow ?

Could your dad not just pay thextra fees himself ?
  • How did you manage to open the account - I thought U 19 accounts were opened in branch only - actually just checked their website to confirm this.

I would not recommend using an account intended for children for this purpose.
As a 19 year old I believe you may be in breach of the terms and conditions of this account by maintaining it. (Read page 12 of under 19's welcome pack - are you sure you still actually hold this type of account?)
I am also confused as to what sort of student you actually are. What sort of university requires payment of fees by online visa debit card? And what sort of accommodation requires a £4000 upfront payment, again by online visa debit card? Very unusual.
Your father is paying out £17,500 for your fees and accommodation but you are concerned about saving him £40 saying it is a lot cheaper. Yes, it may well be but if he pays the extra £40 it could save a lot of potential difficulties which may occur if a £17,500 international transfer is received into a child's account and the 'child' then attempts two massive debit card transactions for the entire value of the transfer. Your dad must also be very trusting to be prepared to transfer all this money into your account rather than make the payments directly himself.
I can find no mention of the debit card transaction limit that you refer to.

He has to pay by online visa debit card not by faster payment. See line 2 of OP.

If he upgrades to a classic or a basic account he will get a debit card that will enable him to make the transactions - if it gets past the fraud prevention people.
  • He'll have a debit card with the U19s account.

The £500 limit is for faster payments via internet banking, there shouldn't be an issue with making a £4,000 debit card payment.
