Aygo, C1, 108 will do 45mpg round town, 60-70mpg on motorways at 60ish.0

Indeed, unless you are facing an upcoming big bill (timing belt replacement for instance) then it's unlikely that any option other than keeping what you've got will make better sense from a purely financial point of view.0 -
Diesel on 5000 miles?
Not a big deal on a 1.9tdi PD. No DPF to worry about, simple vacuum operated EGR on most of them (and easily accessible to be cleaned) and they don't tend to munch through DMFs that often, either. As long as they're serviced no more than every 10K with PD suitable oil, they're fine on either low or high miles. One of few diesels one can say that of.0 -

dual mass flywheel, can be problematic at when it fails it could destroy the clutch
diesel particle filter, often become blocked from low miles around town use where the car spends all its life on the school run and around the shops so the car never gets a chance to self clean the DPF
EGR valve is exhaust gas recirculation valve, becomes gummed up with black sticky deposits and stops working correctly causing problems
just some of the joys of owning a modern diesel engined car0 -
Depends how much your current car is worth and how long you intend to keep it for. Work out how much it costs you each year and for how long vs how much extra another car will cost and you'll have your answer of what is best. Sometimes a petrol car may have higher tax and lower mpg but because it is way cheaper than a diesel over 3 or 4 years with low mileage it still works out cheaper.0

Kia Picanto 1.25, normal driving 45-50 mpg, long journeys 50-60 mpg. £0.00 ved and insurance cheap as well.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Can recommend the Toyota IQ 1.33, have had mine for 2 1/2 years after messing around with old golf gti's for far too long... Great for my 20 mile commute in town and enough guts for the motorway. Average 45mpg in stop start traffic, and never had a problem with it. £30 tax also. The Aygo is essentially the same and cheaper to buy I believe, I just preferred the IQ.0

At 5,000 miles a year your currently buying 750 ltrs of fuel @ £1.05 per liter your spending around £780 + £240 VED.
If you want a 45mpg car then you will only save £225 a year on fuel and maybe £120 VED.
So unless your current car is heading for a big bill stick with it...if you decide to change then running costs and VED shouldnt be one of the reasons - especially with only doing 5,000 miles a year.0
