No. Powerline adapters do not work over separate boxes. Get a Wifi repeater instead. Something like the BT Dual-Band Wi-Fi Extender 1200.

Upstairs has a different "trip" on the breaker box than downstairs so I'm thinking they are different circuits... if so homeplugs wouldn't work would they?

Think the only way for you to find out if they work or not for your setup is to try them out.

I tried them and found them unreliable and much slower than the WiFi (house is probably due a re-wire so don't know if that would make a difference).

I eventually ran a cable through the ceiling, less convenient and more time consuming, but now its done it's done!

I have these and they are used to stream audio within my house for several hours every evening.

Never had an issue and any observed dropouts have been self induced (finger trouble).
It is thought that the issue is the devices entering some sort of sleep state when not used. The usual suggested solution is to regularly ping them, so streaming is probably what is keeping them 'alive'

What are these 'separate boxes' to which you refer?

My experience with repeaters they are really useless.

Anyways If the the property has the same electrics coming into the building, Homeplugs are worth a try

Possibly he means consumer units (meter boxes).

Possibly - but it would be somewhat unusual to have two consumer units in one domestic property. Perhaps two ring main circuits is meant?

If that is indeed what jshm2 meant, then he has been conclusively proved wrong by the OP who is now using powerline adapters across two separate circuits e.g. upstairs ring main and downstairs ring main.

They will also work across consumer units which is yet another incorrect urban myth.

I have one circuit upstairs for sockets and one downstairs for sockets. Both have a different "trip" on the breaker box. My devolo home plugs work - one is plugged in downstairs and one upstairs. No major issues. They are useful for adding additional devices to the router.

If you're having problems with one device taking up too much bandwidth, you can log in to the router's software and limit the bandwidth used by the Xbox. Plus you won't have to spend money on hardware.

It was just the wireless b/width that was the problem. If it was just him on his Xbox then that's ok, my PC is hardwired but if anyone else needed wireless it was pretty much useless, mainly due to the distance between the rooms=not the strongest signal.
With the homeplugs everyone is happy...the Mrs can now get good speed on her laptop & lets face it, keeping the Mrs happy is well worth the £35 :D
