Thinking of getting homeplugs but..

Options
I need to install one downstairs connected to the router & the other upstairs for the boys xbox to stop him sucking the life out of the wifi.
Upstairs has a different "trip" on the breaker box than downstairs so I'm thinking they are different circuits... if so homeplugs wouldn't work would they?

    They will work.

They do have a habbit of randomly dropping though (due to (electrica) noise, power fluctuations) so can be a pain in the middle of a game.

All depends on your setup though, you might be lucky!

Mine are ok but they sometimes drop to 100 rather than 1000 due to said issues, with occasional drops but reconnect in a few seconds usually.

I don't know if this will help at all but I used to have the smaller BT version 500 I think. This used to drop out at what seemed totally random times. They brought out a 1000 version some months ago, so, as I am not known for my patience with machines, I decided to try it. It has never to my knowledge dropped the connection. The speed is also much better than the info led me to expect.

ETA I should have added that my computer & the router are on different "rings". One on the upstairs and one on the downstairs "ring".

Some drop connections others don't. I had a cheap 50Mbps set from ebay that used to come with the BT hub package and they worked fine until eventually one of them died. I've since bought a set of Trendnet 500Mbps units and I get at least 2 dropped connections a day.

My DLink 650's have never dropped out, to my knowledge. I guess the variations in different set ups cannot guarantee they won't.
They work fine on the different rings up and down.
My Brother in laws kids use them for gaming and have never complained. So, I take that to mean they are definitely OK.

Interestingly "things have changed" during the period that Homeplugs have been out, and I found some of The Top 5 Myths about Homeplugs quite enlightening.

My 500mps units are very reliable, no drop outs. They were on a different trip but on the same main circuit, so it worked fine.
The higher the speed the better the reliability because it uses more frequencies and there's less chance of intereference acrsoss all the frequencies. My old 200mphs units aren't as reliable as the 500mphs AV units.

  • I have TP-LINK AV500 Nano (TL-PA411KIT) adaptors and they are forever losing the connection - really annoying. Most of the time they recover after 30-60seconds but sometimes I have to physically unplug one and plug it back in.

I've got exactly the same ones and never had a problem :o

I have these and they are used to stream audio within my house for several hours every evening.

Never had an issue and any observed dropouts have been self induced (finger trouble).

I ordered 2 TP link AV600 yesterday & they turned up today at 10 am.
Everything working within 5 minutes & so far not a problem, far quicker than wireless too.
