Flight cancellation compensation

Hi Guys
I was looking for advice. I have recently had a flight cancelled by Ryan Air whilst abroad due to france air strikes. The issue is, on the phone to their customer service they didn't have any flights left and they advised me to request a refund online and find another flight. They did not let me know they could bounce me on different flights to get me home or give me any other options. I did what I was advised but then could not find another flight. Have I now lost my rights for any compensation as I feel they have advised me badly and they left me in the lurch abroad as they would not help me find another flight once I clicked the request refund button.
in the end I found a flight the next day and had to find another hotel.
thanks

Have you tried to claim for the hotel and new flight?
If you paid by credit card (and flight was more than £100) discuss the consequential loss with your card provider.0
