Alternatives to air-con for a flat

Can anyone recommend or suggest alternatives to aircon suitable for a one bed flat. I already have a dehumidifier but the flat really just seems to hold on to the heat, I understand this is worsened by my having only the one external wall. I know you can get a fan as well as keeping windows open but that just moves the air around in one specific spot. Air con would be costly to install and run so just wondering if there was an alternative that had not as yet occurred to me. Thanks

Buy an American fridge. Remove the shelves. Sit in it.

gat a fan and point it at a bowl of ice, it will cool the room a bit but nowhere near as good as air aircon.

When the ice has melted replace it with fresh ice.

Have you been taking inspiration from Homer in the Simpsons?
  • open fridge/freezer door, and point fan towards it, it will push the cold air out. not sure if its worth doing though.

I live in a top floor flat which gets very warm in the summer - the fact that it also stays warm in the winter with very minimal heating takes away some of the pain.

Unfortunately the heat removed from the air by melting the ice will be compensated for by the head put into the air from the freezer freezing the ice.

You can get all-in-one air conditioners that only need a couple of vent ducts to the outside, so only need mounting on the inside of an external wall with no outside equipment, eg

Switch off the dehumidifier! Sure they dry the air but they also kick out heat as they do it.

You could try closing curtains/blind during the day to cut down on the heat gain.

All that said, I suspect it won't be too much if a problem now until next year.

Stand 2x2ltr bottles of frozen water, on a towel in front of the fan. Have 2 more in the freezer to replace when melted. Lasts a few hours and blows cold air out.
We used to do this when we lived in Spain and it worked.
