Detroit flights

We are having trouble finding a reasonably priced flight to Detroit from LHR in August next year.
We used to fly there regularly and there were a few options for airlines, but it now looks like Delta are the only company that goes there direct. Because of this lack of competition, the prices charged seem outrageous to me.
We are going to see friends so it's no good saying try somewhere else in the US, and we are restricted with the dates because we want to see the solar eclipse down in Kentucky.
Does anyone have any ideas for getting to Detroit without one of those 18+ hour multi-stop journeys?

be wary of the Air Canada flights as they may be operated by Air Canada Rouge...at a minimum check out the reviews (don't believe they have many repeat customers)0

You may be a tadge early for August flights as not all airlines will have released their schedules/fares yet.0

Don't know when the solar eclipse in Kentucky is, or whether you're doing that before or after visiting your friends, but the second half of August is often cheaper than the first halfEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0

Have you looked at going via Toronto - it's a more competitive route, plus you would probably not have too long to wait for a connecting flight.
There used to be a Grayhound bus between Toronto and Detroit too, though from downtown not the airport.0 -
That is a good suggestion if the OP is up to driving after the flight. Basically head south west out of Toronto on the 401 (just over 200 miles) and that will take you to the US border point at Detroit. Avoid peak times and once out of the GTA traffic usually flows well (barring incidents).Have you looked at going via Toronto - it's a more competitive route, plus you would probably not have too long to wait for a connecting flight.
