And the account numbers my first to my last differ by 9,512 digits.

Thats an average of 3,170 account openings a day over the period.
You often find such numbering is non sequential, with arbitrary large numbers used off a random number generator, because customers who respond to the marketing and hope they are buying a well established product do not want to notice that their 8-digit account number is only 00000003.

And there again it could indeed be sequential

"The company, whose chief executive is Mark Mullen, the former boss of First Direct, said in December that it had taken more than £110m in deposits across its fixed-rate saver accounts"

So in a matter of months it had taken in 110m, and with a staff of 250 I'm guessing it will have a few more accounts over and above my three, or there is a lot of Candy Crush being played in the office

I've noticed that several of my accounts with a particular bank all end with the same two digits, suggesting that the number of accounts (if there is a sequence at all) are only 100th of the change in account number.
Another bank fairly obviously has a check digit as the last digit of the account number, again suggesting a smaller number of account openings between two given account numbers.

And on Bowlhead's point, I've always been suspicious of my account number starting 1235....

Can you download app, open account and furnish money from a PC without using your phone to pass the money.
Can you simply obtain the details of the Atom Deposit Account and not need to leave bank details on the phone.
I ask as someone who doesn't use their mobiles for any transactions for security reasons. My hang-up, I know but feel more secure on PC.

You need to supply details of a "linked account" using the app on your phone. You can transfer the money from the linked account using a PC with the destination sort code and account number provided to you by the app. So no "transaction" using the app but you do need to provide the linked account details. There is not much that somebody can do with just the sort code and account number of your bank account; these details are on your debit card and so can be obtained by anybody with access to the card.

Thanks for the reply. Yes you're correct, limited to just the sort code and a/c no. even I'd feel secure. I wish I was more trusting - it's the only thing stopping me using Uber.

You can't use your phone to get the money into Atom (well, not from the app) , because that would mean the app could suck money out of other accounts !

If you were ultra paranoid you could even delete the app off your phone once you'd noted the account no and sort code. Or perhaps you'd best do that after you checked the money had landed in the account.

    I don't see it as a risk
For the record, I wasn't suggesting it's in any way risky as such, especially with FSCS coverage, just that on the face of it it's not an obvious choice of institution for someone who sees himself as 'very old school', which to me has connotations of only wanting to deal with managers in branches and so on!

Pretty sure you aren't restricted to transfers in from the linked account though.

Yes, I think you're right. I opened an account recently (Post Office?) where this was a restriction.
