Dishwasher On Top Of Wshing Machine?

Is it practical to have a dishwasher sat on top of a washing machine, or perhaps even sat below one? We only have enough space in the kitchen for a slim line dish washer, but we could possibly sit one on top or below the washing machine in the ajoining untility area. Is this practical? Would it work?

you might have drainage problems with one or the other whichever is on top
  • Really, how so?

It would have been my guess that being higher up it would drain better due to gravity.

I am a complete DIY novice though. And I do mean novice in every sense of the word.

I'm not sure that either would be a good option.
    • A fully loaded washing machine on top of a dishwasher is very heavy, and if the load is unbalanced and the machine vibrates it could move off the top and come crashing down.
    • I would think that the upper shelf of a dishwasher on top of a washing machine would be quite high and would make loading and unloading rather tricky.
If you have a tumble drier among your kitchen stuff - I'd be inclined to swap it out for the dishwasher and sit the TD on top of the WM. Just to be sure, you can fit something non-slip between the two. It's what I've done at home and have never had a problem.

  • We did this until we extended the utility room. Worked fine for us but you need to be quite tall. ;)
  • Excellent! Which way around did you do it Haribo?

why cant you fit a strong shelf between them so they are not next to each other meaning each can be accessible separately.

Dishwasher on top. It said it was it's favoured position. ;):D
  • One quick thought - If you put too much weight on the washing machine, for example by putting the dishwasher directly on it then the motor will shake itself to bits as it needs to be able to move freely (thus why you should never attach your washing machine to the units/counter). if you have a shelf between, they should be ok - so long as you can reach the buttons to switch it on - and access the working bits you need to!

  • A washing machine definitely needs to be on the floor, it will will have excessive vibration and even fall off if placed on top of a dishwasher.
I would not recommend placing a dishwasher directly on the washing machine either, due to vibration.
  • Can't comment on the plumbing but as dishwashers are hinged at the bottom wouldn't it be a bit difficult to load and unload at that height? Logically, it would be easier to load and unload the washing machine on top but then, of course, the comments above come into play.

Suppose you could get a stool!
