Need help, car insurance nightmare - no refund?

Hi all,
I need some advise, I am having a lot of trouble with my current car insurers "General Accident"
to keep things short, I found better car insurance and want to cancel my insurance with general accident however when I go to cancel they are going to charge me a £54 cancellation fee and under the "refunds section" they are saying that they are unable to process the refund. ("Sorry! We were unable to process the refund. Please email us atteam@generalaccident.com including your policy number and the best number to contact you on and we'll be in touch shortly.")
They do not have a company phone number, the only point of contact is through emails of which I have been trying to contact them and unsurprisingly received no response. (I have tried to ring the claims team and asked to me patched through to someone in support but that had no luck)
I need to figure out how much money I am going to receive back and hope they are not going to take all of my money and charge me more on top for leaving them.
please can someone advise? I am 5 months into the car insurance policy.
many Thanks

It's not a nightmare - it's what you agreed to when you took out the policy
https://www.generalaccident.com/about-us
And cancellation rates are outlined here
https://www.generalaccident.com/help/what-are-our-cancellation-rates
Maybe if it's too difficult then the internet isn't for you and a trip to Swinton would be better0 -
"If your policy started more than 14 days ago, you’ll be charged a £50 (plus Insurance Premium Tax where applicable) cancellation fee as well as a pro-rata fee for the time you’ve been covered"
does pro rata mean ill receive (total cost of insurance amount - days covered (5 months worth) - cancellation fee of £50)0 -
Bit baffled at the PPI aspect to this..?0

Such a toxic community, I was only seeking some help.0

Not really toxic, just people come and make out that they're being hard done by, when it's their own making. People get fed up with the seemingly endless flow of people who simply don't read their terms and conditions. We’ll provide 24/7 customer service over the telephone once you’ve obtained your first quote on our website and then for a period of 35 days from the date your policy begins. (Just remember to have your quote or policy number ready.)
After 35 days, once your policy is up and running, we don’t provide phone support. Of course, if you need to make a claim, you can call our dedicated claims line anytime.
Pretty clear really.
With the quote being cheaper, I can only guess you're paying by monthly installments. By the time you deduct their cancellation fee and any pro-rata insurance costs, are you going to be better off switching? Those 5 month will not count towards any NCD as it's only for full years.0 -

The more appropriate forum would have been this one:

However, the "toxic" answer at post #2 is all you would have been (perhaps more politely )told on the Insurance forum .
Why on earth are you trying to cancel a policy five months in? I can't see any scenario where you will come out of this having paid less. Wait until your insurance is up for renewal and then look for other providers.0 -
Looks like a post has been deleted in the thread."And other insurance"
This is a reclaim for mis-sold insurance. Yours was not mis-sold."If your policy started more than 14 days ago, you’ll be charged a £50 (plus Insurance Premium Tax where applicable) cancellation fee as well as a pro-rata fee for the time you’ve been covered"
does pro rata mean ill receive (total cost of insurance amount - days covered (5 months worth) - cancellation fee of £50)
If you paid annually, then you will get around 7/12ths back minus £50. However, do note that pro-rata is not normally to the day unless it is within the cancellation rights period. it can be rounded to the month. So, it could be 6/12ths.
Also, if your premium included non-refundable extras, which can be things like recovery breakdown, then these are not refundable.
Finally, if you have had a claim on the policy in the period of cover, then you get no refund.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I paid the insurance off in one big payment, not monthly0

Yippee - I've got a label
Normally I'm only 'toxic' after a few pints of Guinness and for a whole different reason :rotfl:0
