Cancelling BT broadband and phone

I want to cancel my phone and broadband with BT but from which date does my contract end? The day that I actually signed up online with them or the day the service was physically connected? BT managed to screw up the original order so that the broadband was delayed going over which resulted in different start dates for each service. Do I also need to request a Mac number from BT in advance of changing supplier or is this all automatic now?
Thanks for your help people!

If your minimum term was 12 months, then to leave without early termination charges, then you need to move at least 12 months after the contract started ( so the anniversary of the first day of service, not when you ordered service ) so if the broadband date is later than the landline, it's the broadband anniversary , the landline would just become a rolling (30 day notice ) contract
You will have to factor in any notice you have to give (upto 30 days ?)
There is no such thing as MAC anymore, it's gaining provider led, so they(the company you want to move to) contact BT on your behalf, you don't need to call BT at all.
If you don't use the recognised migration process , you may get charged a broadband cease fee (about £30)

Be prepared though for them not being able to cancel over the phone

I rang 29th Aug to give my months notice to cancel

"Sorry there is a technical fault, some one will call in 5 working days"

I insisted there and then it was logged that my cancellation was started that day

7th Sept, not having heared I rang again

"Sorry there is a technical fault, someone will be in touch in five working days"

Today I rang again. The advisor this time said he had never heard of such problems and if I didn't mind holding, he would cancel me

Took 20 mins of holding but final bill will be dated the 20th

BT are inept imho. You have to be on the ball because they most certainly aren't
  • Inept is very much the word for BT. My phone was put over at the end of november and the bb at the end of December due to a 'problem' according to BT meaning I cannot now cancel until years end. It wouldn't surprise me that they do this on purpose to gain an extra month before I can leave. I won't be staying with them despite the recent sweeteners they have been pushing.
    Thx for replies folks.☺
