What we really need from OP is details about what the normal route and mileage will be. This will determine fuel type. How many in the car? Just OP or family too?
This is important. My sons waited over 12 months from passing their tests to getting cars but were still 18 and 19 respectively when they took out insurance. First year premiums were c£900 (Peugeot 307) and c£800 (Renault Megane) The premiums would have been considerably more without the full year's 'experience'.
Has the OP said how old they are?You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
I am 25 years old.
The commute would be around 7 miles round trip a day.
I have looked at the insurance on a VW polo 1.2 and a corsa 1.6 both come out at £500ish ..
Thanks :beer:0 -
Look at a Skoda Fabia far better value than a polo. take a friend and yes buy privately if possible. At that price you will get far more for your money.
BUT
Dont be in a rush to buy, have a few different models in mind rather than 1 specific one. Yaris, Corrola worth looking at too.
Thanks for the pointer are you referring to the 2010 ones?
Are Skoda's reliable?0 -

Also i i am interested to know why they are good value ?

Can certainly vouch for the Fabia. Great little car, but as others have said almost anything in that class fits the bill.
Just shop around (autotrader) and look for the ones with low mileage and full service history. You’ll get the best deal privately, but dealer is better for peace of mind. Take someone with you who knows about cars if you can.0 -

They are good value because they are basically VW designs but built in a low cost economy.0 -
You need to think outside the box as well.
A friend of our sons had an old Volvo estate as a first car. Fuel consumption was rubbish compared to the Corsas and Polos that his mates had but he saved £3k on insurance.
Like he said, £3000 pays for an awful lot of petrol.0 -
As the cost of insurance is going to play a part in this (and possibly dent your car budget) I would suggest the confused.com quick quote app.
I have been using it a lot over the last few weeks when looking at used cars - its been a really useful tool.
If you don't know how it works - create a login on the proper confused.com web site, enter all of your details on there including annual mileage, driver details, voluntary excess etc and do the first quote on any old car.
Download the confused.com app to your smartphone
Then, when you log on to the app on your phone all you need to do is enter a registration number and click 'quick quote' - after a few seconds you will see the best quote on your phone screen. You will quickly get an idea if a car yo are looking at on the forecourt or on autotrader web site is going to be in your insurance price range.
Another good feature is that when you get home and log back on to the confused.com web site, all of the quotes you have done are stored there.
Hope this helps.0
