Hello everyone!
So have had my licence 5 years but have never owned a car in that time.
I have decided now is the right time but I know nothing about cars.
I would like a car which is very reliable (don't we all), cheap for parts, has good fuel economy but can handle steep hills and overtaking easy if required
I have hears good things about the old VW polls which are meant to be very reliable? Other than that I have no idea, what else is a good choice to consider?
Should I consider private sellers or is that a bad idea?
Any help would be appreciated

Your choice maybe restricted on what cars you can insure for sensible money?
Daughter wanted a freelander, spotted one for £600 but the £8000 insurance premium seemed a tad excessive.
Bought a KA instead with the insurance coming in at £900.
Virtually every car sold in the past 30 years fits your requirements.
When the little smart cars first came out one used to overtake me everymorning, outside lane at approx 90mph.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
get a cheap peugeot or Vauxhall corsa that will do0

How much money do you want to spend? There's no point suggesting a Merc S class if your budget only runs to a Yugo.0

Whoops forgot to mention that up to 4k max but ideally 3k, but if I will get a lot less issues spending another 1k I would rather

vw about average no better,
If your after a small car maybe japanese or Korean, but you will also need to compare insurance as that could cost more than the car for a new driver especially if your young
Need to know your budget0 -

OP has said 3-4k. As far as insurance company is concerned, he/she will have been driving for 5 years, though will have no NCD.
What we really need from OP is details about what the normal route and mileage will be. This will determine fuel type. How many in the car? Just OP or family too?0 -
Look at a Skoda Fabia far better value than a polo. take a friend and yes buy privately if possible. At that price you will get far more for your money.
BUT
Dont be in a rush to buy, have a few different models in mind rather than 1 specific one. Yaris, Corrola worth looking at too.0 -
You're showing your age!

I tried to think of the worst car from my driving lifetime, although there aren't many still registered in the UK now so maybe they are becoming valuable museum pieces!
