Cheapest way to heat water

Hi
Sorry if this may seem a bit of a daft question but I suspect I am wasting money at the moment heating water. I have an electric shower and oil CH. On on a work day I only really need hot water for washing up morning and evening and at a weekend for washing and maybe a bath, but currently I have the heating/HW on for an hour every morning and evening. I guess what I'm trying to ask is if it is cheaper to heat the HW with the immersion heater as and when I need it or is it cheaper to heat it via the oil boiler.
thanks

Unless your hot water heats overnight on economy 7, electric water heating is usually very expensive.0

See this discussion and you'll find that heating oil delivers 11.53kWh per litre. Divide your price per litre by that and you'll get the number of pence per kWh. Compare that to your electricity cost.0

Using Electricity(unless you have Economy 7) to heat HW is between 2 and 3 times more expensive than oil.0

Boil the kettle to get hot water for washing up rather than heating a whole tank full.0

Cardew, you seem to have knowledge in this area.
Is using lpg more expensive to heat HW than electricity? I've switched off lpg boiler and use immersion for HW.0 -

Electricity is more expensive if you have a 'normal' tariff. (approx twice as expensive)
If you have Economy 7 it is cheaper during the 7 hours at night, but even more expensive during the day.(as is all your other electrical consumption).0
