I work abroad quite a lot and my bank requires me to enter a texted code to make online transactions occasionally into their website.

The bank have told me the number has to a UK mobile number registered in the UK.

I was thinking to buy a cheap phone on pay as you go and leave it with a relative, but i would prefer not to burden the relative and do it myself, but i cant think of a way around it.

I also don't want the hassle of changing to a bank that does not operate this two step verification process.

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

(I have tried registering a foreign number before but the texts weren't sent as the phone number was outside the UK)

Thanks in advance.

  • keep the uk payg with you abroad. As long as the phone is roaming it will receive messages as if its in the Uk, free

The physical phone can be anywhere

Do you not have a UK mobile phone?

Why would you need to << leave it with a relative>>? Just use it yourself.

would the costs to receive an sms be quite costly outside of Europe?

i dont want the added expense of having a uk contact, as im not in the UK much, and how would i top up the pay as you go outside the UK?
  • Does your bank not have a mobile banking app?

Other solution is a cheap as chips mobile (old style) and a pay and go sim that uses all the balance to save on top ups rather than one where you have to top up monthly. You can top up online these days.

If you have an unlocked phone you could simply carry around a uk pay go sim and pop it in your phone as and when required to receive these texts.
Texts to EU are cheaper now texts to outside Europe could be more expensive.

Receiving a SMS is always free no matter where the phone is!!

You have no problem. Just load the PAYG with £10 and that will keep the number live for at least 6 months. Make one chargeable call/text and you get another 6 months and so on. The £10 should last years

thanks a lot for all the great replies, i think my best solution would be by a pay as you go sim and pop it in my phone when i need to receive an sms.

btw, sorry to ask something different but can i renew my uk driving licence online when aboard and get it posted to my address in the UK and pick it up when i arrive back?

or get a Dual SIM phone like the Moto Dual Sim G4 so you just check your SMS messaging instantly
