How am I supposed to have time for hobbies if work kills me?

    Firstly apologies for not replying sooner and more informative of my situation. My initial post was way OTT, I do agree, most of it was heat of the moment.

    My commute is about 25-30 minute walk at a steady pace, but after being on my feet all day and literally sweating in a hot alluminium factory my legs are so sore come home time I literally don't want to do a thing. Granted, it's been my 4th day but even if I do get used to it, no doubt there's some long term effect for my legs and feet!

    Anywho, just continuing on from that point, I was off sick through depression/anxiety and was ready to go back this week (to a different job as I believe my previous job was doing me no good) and I've just been thrown right into the deep end I guess. But yeah, I'm just so knackered, I can't even bring myself to walk over to the doctors and get my prescription. As soon as I get home I collapse. I started running a couple weeks ago to get my fitness levels up and help with my depression and now I haven't been once this week. 1 step forward, 2 steps back :(

    And to add insult to injury one of my colleagues had a go at me today saying I'm not fast enough and it's not good enough. That did me the world of good :mad:

    Anywho, I did exaggerate a lot, mainly to make me realize what I actually do, compared to other people, is nothing.

    Oh, and finally, yes my name is a reference to a popular British rock band.

    I'd suggest a planned sit down time with your feet up, or brief nap (10-30 mins max), when you get home each day. Raising your legs and feet will ease them a lot, then you might have energy to do something more energetic or interesting. Even listening to music whilst reading a book is more energising than watching the TV.

    It will get better with time and it will be easier when the weather isn't quite so warm: working and walking in hot weather can be really exhausting.

    There are always critical people, wherever you work. In new situations I tend to briefly consider if they have a point, then let it go. Once you've worked there for a while, you will know who is helpful and supportive and who the troublemakers are (if there are any).

    We all say things in the heat of the moment, especially if we are tired and feeling overwhelmed.

    Don't worry, things will get easier in time. Things that tire you out now, wont tire you out so much once you are in a new routine of going to work, leaving you more energy for doing fun things.

    Just be gentle on yourself, give yourself time to adjust, and you'll be fine.

    but definitely find the time/energy to go and get your meds :)

    You absolutely MUST get your meds and MUST take them exactly as prescribed. Anti-depressants (which I'm guessing you are taking, apols if I'm wrong) are designed to build up in your body so you get a constant effective level. If you miss doses then the level already in your body drops and won't be as effective until you build it up . If you miss pills 'regularly' you could be running on half effective levels, making you feel carp. I've done it and was reprimanded by my GP !!

    Lecture over ! Going back to a question I asked earlier - are you eating nutritiously (is that a word ?!). Walking to work means you should have a decent breakfast, such as beans on toast, eggs, fruit and yoghurt etc. Manual work - you need a decent packed lunch or meal to fuel your day and give you the energy to get home and prep your dinner. Think about my idea of a slow cooker. Have a good dinner then you can enjoy the evening.

    What about swimming as exercise, maybe running is too vigorous and hard on your legs/feet.

    Lastly don't try to rush things along, don't panic too soon. You've been ill, still on meds, started a new job, personally I would just be patient for a few weeks to let yourself settle into a routine. Then work out what you want to do, what hobbies and interests etc.

    Just out of interest, because Im a nosey what-not, what hobbies and interests would you like to pursue in an ideal world ?

    I suspect the problem is a combination of.

    Not being that fit to start with.
    That comes with time and walking is very good far better than running.

    Wrong footwear
    In a factory this may be a bit harder to fix if you need safety footwear

    Wrong diet(you need much more food when exercising more)
    What are you eating, give an example of your daily intake.

    dehydration, don't think this has been mentioned it is a common cause of fatigue and if you are in a hot sweaty environment you will need a lot more than you have been used to
    If you have been getting thirsty you need to drink more before you get thirsty(more food will help this as well).

    How is your weight?
    That can have an impact and walking is very good at helping with this.
    underweight can also be an issue.


    Another option to help would be a bike for the commute, partly to easy the load on your legs but also speed it up initially 1/2 the time taking it really easy.

    I expect you will find the walking will soon be so much easier. I had a long walk to work in my last job. The first month I think it took me an hour and I arrived home looking like death. After a few months I was doing it in 20-30 minutes. You might need to look at what footwear you are walking in. Having a pair of shoes/boots that you just wear to and from work might make a big difference. There are lots of cushioning insoles out there. Even doing some girly foot pampering might be a big help! I have known so many men complain about foot pain and when you look at their feet their heels are split etc. If it is a real problem see a chiropodist.

    As others have said eating properly will help so much. Having a snack and some water just before you leave work will help.

    As jayII says you might need to reconsider what you do in the evenings. I read a study once where they found watching TV actually left people more mentally and physically tired than just sitting there. I have a male friend who found doing cross-stitch in the evenings helped him both physically and mentally, but you may want to find something more macho!

    There are some very comfortable safety trainers around. I wore some Dickies branded ones nearly every day for over a year both at work and at home. It would be worth looking around for something that you find comfortable.
  • So unfair.. I work 800-430 this week for minimum wage. On my feet all day. Have to walk and just got back I'm so aching I can't do anything like I used to do like work out and go for a run. Can't even carry on learning the guitar. Work sucked it out of me and all I get is minimum wage. Barely get any money for myself after the bills. What's worse is I'm on shifts next month. They suggest overtime but thats just taking the biscuit! Just work then watch tele for the rest of my life.. whats the point in workin if I aint got the energy to be fit and play in a band?
    Tempted to just go back to bein on the doll tbh. How do people do it

    Its only 9 and half hours..... :p
  • A lot of footwear the heals are too thick which cause a lot of issues walking, those that are closer to a normal foot profile are much better

    if you also spend a lot of time standing in one place look at fatigue mats
  • Be glad you have a job that pays you, whereas i've been working for free for some time which only has seemed to give employers the impression that I am willing to work for free so any paid job I apply for seems to get ignored. I'd switch places in a heartbeat, i'd do anything to skip the interview stage, which is mainly the reason i stay in unpaid jobs, they don't require interviews and you have your own flexibility as if you were self-employed.
