Best TV box for students?

My 2 other flatmates and myself have just realised that our new student house doesn't come with a tv box of any kind (Sky/Virgin/Freeview etc.). We get broadband, an old tv and a tv licence included in our rent - but no tv box
I've looked at the obvious places but Virgin and Sky include broadband and are probably out of our price range! Freeview doesn't let you record shows (unless you purchase a £150 recorder) and that is something we use a lot.
So, does any one have any advice or recommendations for us? We are all new to this, haha!

If you want free tv (excluding the licence) then buying a PVR is your only means of recording. However, you will probably get a Humax recorder, or similar, cheaply (some around £20 at the moment) from Ebay as people upgrade to Youview boxes. Also, you can save by looking at the MSE link to Ebay listings local to you and collecting in person.
You can take just tv from Sky, Virgin, TalkTalk etc., without taking phone or broadband.0
