Clutch Problem

Comments

  • Got it back from Mr Clutch last night...They charged me £275.00 for the following work;

    Slave Cylinder £65.00
    Master Cylinder £75.00
    Labour £90.00
    Clutch Fluid Change £15.00
    Repair Bracket £30.00

    TOTAL £275

    Is this about right?

They wanted me to get the clutch done aswell (£390) claiming it's very heavy and will break the Slave/Master Cylinder (The work they just did) at anytime!!!

Are they trying to rip me off, or is this true?

    Many Thanks
  • How heavy is the clutch? As the clutch plate wears the pedal will become heavier and the take up of drive when you let the clutch out will be near the top of the pedal travel.

The clutch feels the same as it's been since I had the car (May 06), and done 25K since then.

Can the Slave/Master Cylinder break if the Clutch goes???
  • Paddock Spares (usually amongst the cheapest LR parts) says :-

    Freelander 1.8

    Clutch Slave £38.50
Clutch Master £37.50 , both plus the dreaded.

    Gen. parts m/cyl £77 + vat from land-rover-parts-shop.com

... so your prices aren't nice, but not stupid either, compared with dealer prices.

Not sure which bracket you broke. The clutch pedal assembly is listed at about £30 from a dealer, but the clutch actuator bracket (which I thought was the one that breaks) is listed at about a fiver. The master cylinder also comes pre-filled with fluid, so it's hard too see what they did with the extra litre and a half that fifteen quid should get you.

For your info. I have a BMW 323Ci 2.5 and the clutch for my car is £126 and my local mechanic charges me £150. So Mr Clutch place is overprice, if your clutch ever needs changing or any other part for the matter, use a good local mechanic and you'll pay alot less.
