M&S - paid in full AND took DD

in Credit cards
I paid off my M&S card in full (as per the statement balance on my last statement) and then they have STILL taken my DD as well, which has now put me into my (thankfully interest free) overdraft
I was under the impression that if you paid your full balance then they didn't take the DD as well, as this has yet to happen (the DD is there as insurance in case I forget to make the transfer).
Do I have any recourse for getting the payment back from them, or just accept that my CC is now in credit and I just whack the rest of the month's petrol and groceries on the card?

Do their terms state that they don't take the DD if a manual payment is made?
If so, then it may have been a timing issue. When did you pay and when was the DD set to take?
Either way, ask them for a refund or just spend it.0 -
Some card providers, eg MBNA, take the DD no matter what other payments you make to the card between the statement date and the date the 3-day DD process starts.
Some card providers, eg Santander, don't take the DD if you make a manual payment before the 3-day DD process has started.
All card providers (at least in my experience) tell you their policy on manual payments affecting, or not, the DD...on the statement and/or in the DD confirmation letter.
It's probably easier to spend the money, and generate a little extra in reward points (if they're still doing them?), than to ask them for a refund.
Just on the DD, if it's not called for 13 months it will lapse under the dormancy rules...so be forgetful once in a while!0 -
Hi
M and S always in my dealing with them take the DD no matter what other payments are made. They may refund you the payment if you speak to them

Ah, I think it's a timing issue. Payment was due on the 10th, so I did my manual payment to hit the account on the 9th. I guess because the 10th was a Saturday they just called the DD anyway.
Oh well, all the petrol is getting put on the card for the next two weeks.0 -
My credit cards with MBNA and Tesco Bank still claim the Direct Debit even if the Minimum Payment for the statement month has been met.
I've tried to find out on the M&S Bank website about their policy for DDs but all I could find (I'm likely not looking hard enough!) was that if your fixed payment was lower than the minimum payment due then they'd collect the MP rather than the FP.It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
DDs are popular around here, but I don't use them. Suggest you "take back control" and cancel your DD.0

The DD process started on Thursday 8th, for collection today, Monday 12th.Ah, I think it's a timing issue. Payment was due on the 10th, so I did my manual payment to hit the account on the 9th. I guess because the 10th was a Saturday they just called the DD anyway.
Interesting line in the T&Cs, although I suspect it's directed more towards deliberately creating a large positive balance...M&S_credit_card_T&Cs wrote:[FONT=M&SLondon-Regular][FONT=M&SLondon-Regular]You must try not to pay into the account more than you owe us. We will refund any credit on your account. We will not normally allow you to spend it.

That not very good advice because I can guarantee that at least one person who reads this thread will forget to make a payment to a credit card at some point in their life!.0 -
Was the DD for the minimum amount?0

You could always ask your bank to reclaim the DD, if a mistake has been made your entitled to a full immediate refund under DD guarantee0
