Sorry to spoil, but they are terrible.
I purchased a full insurance, due to a scratch I had to pay 150 euro that more then 3 months of claim, I didn't get them back.
Later on I read that this happen to a lot of other people.0 -

I think there's some confusion over a hire car search engine (Vehicle Rent, Car Trawler, Argus etc) and the actual company hiring out the cars booked through that search engine (Hertz, Budget, Dirent, Goldcar, etc).
Vehicle Rent don't hire out their own cars, but book them with partner companies on your behalf, often up selling their own insurances.
I use various search engines for hire cars and book around 5 to 6 a year and they all seem to throw up the same cars and hire companies.
Then it's just down to selecting the company/car you trust/want.
All the terms and conditions need reading carefully as they can vary wildly from one to another on the same class of car, pay particular attention to the excess deposits as some can be a couple of grand and at the desk at collection you'll no doubt be pestered to buy their excess insurance. (don't, buy a separate policy before you leave, saves a fortune, often lasts a year and just confidently tell them you don't need theirs).
Seems most complaints aren't really the fault of the search engines, but their partners or more likely the renter not actually reading and understanding the terms and conditions of the hire company.
I have used Vehicle Rent many times and never had a bad experience and it's possible to bag a cheap car without any fuss, but you have to research the offers carefully.
My record for cheap hire was 4.2 euro a day last May via Vehicle Rent, was well impressed as I was given a brand new car, but that wasn't down to Vehicle Rent, that was the actual rental company.
Another route I sometimes take is to book with a local company.
It can be a bit more expensive to start with but they usually come with full insurance included and tend to offer better customer service with zero deposits.
Quite often a close search of your destination airport on Google Maps throws up local companies, then it's just a matter of searching for their reviews.
I was happy I did this last year in Montenegro, the same local company was hiring out under the Hertz brand and on return were hammering Hertz customers for every nick and chip. even on wheels trims.
I managed to bypass all the hassle and just handed the keys over without any problems, they didn't have a deposit from me, so it was pointless trying it on.0
