Car Hire Abroad - Proving no Licence Endorsements

I'm hiring a car at Treviso airport, Venice with EuropCar.

Do I have to take anything apart from my drivers Licence Card to show them I have no Penalty points?

You can get a code here https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

Some say you don't have to, perhaps check the small print of your booking, if you are unsure perhaps take it with you anyway.

I take a code when hiring a car abroad, but I've yet to be asked for anything more than my driving licence.

Hire firms are interested only in your legal entitlement to drive in the form of a valid driving licence, not in what 'penalty points' you might have. The anomaly of the DVLA 'code' to prove that a UK licence holder has not been disqualified is internationally 99% ignored.

I agree, though I do get a code to be safe if I'm hiring from somewhere I haven't hired before.

I think that I've only been asked once for the paper counterpart overseas in all the years since photo licences were introduced, and not at all since the codes came in. Haven't hired a car in the UK recently, but I found in the past they did ask for the paper counterpart more regularly. Not sure if that would be the same for the codes.
  • OK - Thanks everyone. I've just printed off the
'code' richardw mentioned in post 2 and I will take that with me just in case.

    :)
