In terms of wires, I found mine were only interested when they moved - so they showed no interest at all in the TV / phone etc, but if I plug my laptop in when I'm working, or when they are watching, or if I charge my phone, they do get interested. So I think movement rather than the existence of a wire is the issue.

To start with, I'd make sure that he has places to hide, and preferably places where he can feel safe and watch what is going on.

When I got mine (they cam to live with me 2 years ago this week) I started out allowing them downstairs and opened the upstairs once they had settled in. I have a brother and sister and they settled in very quickly. About 20 minutes cowering under the sofa and by the end of the first hour they were snuggled up on my lap!

Aww that's lovely Tbagpuss I hope he settles in so quickly here, just me and dh except overnight Sunday when 9 yr old grandson stays.
I've tidied wires where possible attached to wall so hopefully he won't be too interested in them.

  • I recently made the decision to get a couple of oriental kittens after my much older cat died. Having always had rescues that were always at least a year or so old I was terrified about how two tiny little 12 week old kittens would cope in a big house with lots of bookshelves, high places and things to climb up.

Most worries were unfounded, they're resilient little things. I did keep them in a single room for a couple of weeks and made sure there was nothing they could injure themselves on, and after that they were fine. The biggest danger was me tripping over them on the stairs!

I've found they do like chomping on headphone cables, plastic bags and bubble wrap but they keep away from mains cables. The only other thing I did when they were still small was ensure that the toilet lid was always down. When they were a few months old one did jump into the toilet when I lifted up the lid but she managed to get out very quickly!

They've wreaked havoc on the house (one has a habit of tearing up magazines and leaving the shreds on the floor), but I no longer worry about them hurting themselves.

Oh, one thing to mention, never leave kittens or cats with unattended lengths of string or line (e.g. on those toys on a stick). They can very easily tangle themselves up in that, even in a few seconds.

  • cats don't like citrus so you could rub orange or lemon oil on cables to deter chewing
Cats don't have owners - they have staff!! :D:p
