Making home safe for new kitten

Definitely two, I am so glad I got two! They will chase each other & playfight for hours & like to groom each other. I think i'd be driven mad if I had to do all of the entertaining, they are very high energy!0

We got two a couple of weeks ago. We adopted from the RSPCA and as we work we had to adopt two. They have a rule that if you work then you have to have two so they are not lonely. They play together and sleep together and look after each other. We have always had our cats in pairs.0

Hi and congrats. We had two, girl died in 2014 and we still miss her every day.
I agree, when they are kittens they seem much happier in a pair, everything new is easier to face if you are not alone, right? There will be very little on TV half so entertaining as watching them play together. Once ours were a few months old, they decided they liked each other less but that was largely because Lisa and our adult cat bonded and ganged up on Charlie.
Another kitten my sister had when we were children liked nothing better than to chew the wires of Christmas tree lights and Lisa loved to climb the actual tree. She would have been about six months old at her first Christmas and, after half a dozen nights of resounding crashes at 4 a.m. I decided to dispense with the tree as my nerves were in shreds! I thought someone was breaking in.
Maybe those cable tie thingies could make the wires look less like mice's tails? Best of luck and piccies soon, please.0 -
A very long time ago, we didn't do a kitten headcount before loading the tumble drier.
The very high pitched meeps were as nothing to the full on "Come Here, Now" meows of mother cat, and we very quickly stopped the machine, hauled out the duvet & gently scooped out a somewhat dizzy kitten.
Who was washed vigorously by her mother & left to recover propped between two snoozing siblings - we were all fine.
My word we learned to check the laundry baskets though. I still do, decades later, in an alas-cat-free home. (Husband allergic.)
I second getting two. Yes, twice the insurance, and food, but they reassure each other, play with each other - and when we don't have GBBO on the BBC, Kittens every time!0 -
When my Eric was a kitten he jumped from an open bedroom window on the 1st floor and broke his leg. I suspect it was because he'd just started going out into the garden, so when he smelt outdoor air through the window, off he went.
Even now, 18+ years later I take care not to leave upstairs windows open unless they are out of his reach. I know it's unlikely at his age but I won't take the risk.0 -
Heck, yeah! And please remember cats and kittens can "post" themselves through seemingly impossibly narrow openings, to say nothing of twisting themselves into the most outlandish shapes to get where they want to be.
Once we were advised to keep Lisa in for a week due to a minor infection, to get her to rest and not want to climb/jump. It took her less than twenty minutes to figure out that the catflap, locked on In Only, could be pulled towards her by hooking her claws under it so she could duck under and get out. They are so clever.0 -
I am always in a state of panic when our wee one is out of sight and wonder if she is chewing on wires. Someone suggested spraying bitter apple spray near by - it might help.
Heres Phoebe at 11 weeks she will be 14 weeks on Saturday.0 -
Aah! Phoebe is lovely. I like pure black cats - the darkness seems to accentuate their eyes and their coats are usually glossy. Cat rescue places find that people aren't always keen to adopt black cats, they're seen as boring (or unlucky). I don't mind, I've got a broomstick.0

What an adorable little babe she is! Beauty. Her tail reminds me of Charlie's when he was a kitten, though his is black/grey stripes on top and pale gingery grey underneath... his always made me think of a frayed bootlace, until he grew and it became nice and smooth. I know, I'm nuts.0 -
Ooh phoebe is adorable ,our last cat pippa was pure black so sleek and shiny absolutely beautiful.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0
