2kg Tilda Basmati Rice at Asda £1.88

EDIT - some moneysavers can't find this Tilda offer in their Asda stores, so not a national offer. I found it in Asda Peterborough, though they don't carry a lot of stock.

2kg packs of Tilda rice have been cheap at Asda for a while but now gone even lower to £1.88

This works out significantly cheaper per kg than even the huge 10kg bags (they often cost £14 - £15) and is less than most places charge for 1kg (including Asda).

Also lots of decent offer Organic tins/ jars - eg various types of beans, peanut butter etc.

Plus they have Green and Blacks organic chocolate 100g £1 all varieties.

Asda Smoothies are BOGOF too (quite nice, but not all that thick tbh)

BTW they don't seem to have much shelf space for the rice, so might be worth phoning the store to check they have stock.

Fell a bit guilty advertising for a company like Asda, so please try not to buy anything that they will be making much of a profit on when you visit. :naughty:

    Who cares?

Supermarkets have offers on all the time, and this one is nothing special. Certainly didn't deserve it's own thread.

Oh, and buying branded rice is silly - the Smart Price own brand basmati rice is exactly the same as the Tilda overpriced rubbish.

    Rice is rice.

completeky disagree - tilda is by far and away simply the best rice there is, its like the coca cola of drinks or the mercedes of cars.

Tilda rice is wartered by the himalayan waters - it tastes a lot different (and personally a lot better than the smart price stuff). trust me on this my ex ran a curry restaurant and iv tasted pretty much all the rice there is out there!

100% wrong. THis government report shows how many companies bulk up their basmati rice by mixing in poor quality stuff with it and how the practice is very widespread indeed:

    http://www.foodstandards.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/fsis4704basmati.pdf

I've purchased Tesco Basmati Rice before and it was very poor quality so I expect they are guilty in this area.

That government report says Basmati should be £1.40 per kg on average and that was over 3 years ago.

I've posted the market leading brand for way under the market rate and you don't even have to buy it in a large quantity as you would normally have to.
  • Hey Listen up...

I'm Indian...so i know my rice.....more importantly my *mum* knows her rice and she always buys Tilda or an equally good quality brand.......rice is not just rice....trust me ......

Agree on this. Have made the mistake of buying non-Tilda rice in the past and boy what a mistake that was. By the way around £13 for a 10kg bag is the going rate at most Asian supermarkets in my experience so this offer isn't too bad actually.
  • Also agree with the comments that Tilda is the best rice - I've tried at least six varieties recently and Tilda cooks the fluffiest and with separate grains as well as having a good flavour. Just wash the rice a couple of times in cold water before starting to cook it (to remove any loose starch).

Like most things, there are differences between brands - which one you prefer is a matter of opinion, but they are not "all the same".

I paid £14 for 10kg recently so I'll be off to Asda tomorrow (10kg for £9.40).

    Thanks to OP

I would say Tilda is equivelent to Lambroghinis! Not Mercs lol, lots of cars better than mercs, not that many but only a handful better than lambos!:rotfl:
  • To say rice is just rice is so ridiculous it'ss untrue ... if you are like me and eat rice 3-4 times a week you just know when you are eating the value trash that poppy10 loves so much (she probably thinks mcdonalds chicken is just as good as waitrose breast meat!!) ... i think natco make delicious basmati rice (better than tilda) - grains come out really fine and taste wonderfully nutty and fragrant ... i don't care about price when it comes to good food!! Of course, if you go to India this tilda and natco stuff looks like rubbish in comparison ...

i never thought i would ever contribute to a thread about rice lol
