Eon Smart Meter

Hi,
Just had an Eon Smart Meter for gas and electricity installed and am trying to figure out how to use the meter itself with all the readouts. Can anyone tell me how I alter the tariff, seems to be fixed and can't see in instructions how to change it.

The tariff is set remotely by E.on so you would need them to change it.0

Do you actually mean your Smart Meter or your Smart Energy Display? I've never had cause to inspect my meters.
Your Smart Energy Display should automatically update / show the tariff you're on, (presumably when you're up and running.) Did the installation person give you a time frame?
You don't need to adjust your tariff yourself.

My smart display tells me I use a lot of energy with my immersion heater , and tumble dryer, but less with just my light bulbs.
Clever stuff! No wonder it is called " smart " display.
Was it worth the effort to have my meters changed? I now find that my smart meter is to become " dumb" as my new supplier does not support the current smart system.
What a crazy sett up.0 -

Hello Mikehextall and hope your Smart Meter installation went well.
As gsmlnx and F&W say, the unit rate per kWh on your new In Home Display is set remotely by us. It'll be a bit different from your bills as it doesn't include daily standing charges, discounts and VAT.
Our displays don't give an exact picture but act as a guide to help customers better understand their energy usage. The idea is to try to raise awareness among those less savvy about what they're using with the aim of helping save money by saving energy. The links F&W has posted give a lot of information about how to best use your new display. Thanks F&W.
Check out the traffic lights. They help give an indication of what's being used at any given time. The longer the set-up is active and the more data it gathers about your particular property, the better the indication of what low, medium and high use will be.
Hope this helps Mikehextall and that you'll find your new Smart Meter set up useful.

Spot on fredandwilma. As above, we remotely set the unit prices per kWh on our Smart In Home Displays. Thank you for posting the links. Lots of useful information which should be of particular help to customers new to our Smart Meters.

Malc,
Could you clarify for me whether the smart meters themselves (if you have two) display (or can display, when asked by the customer) the current meter readings?
If not, what happens if the in house display unit fails, gets mislaid or gets broken?
And, once it’s been installed and set up by E.ON, can the day of the week and the frequency with which (not on which!) it transmits its readings to E.ON be altered or adjusted by the customer?
Can the customer, for example, set it to send the readings every Sunday morning at 10:00 am? And can the customer then change that, if s/he wants to?
I ask these questions academically and just out of curiosity.
I have to confess that everything I read about them makes me glad I’ve refused E.ON permission to install them at my home.
If I ever doubted the wisdom of doing that, all such thoughts are banished comprehensively by:

Does this mean that they don't display the actual tariff and the number of units/kWhs that you have consumed of each fuel? Just what do they display, both on the in house display and on the meters themselves?0 -
Morning Sosumi and yes, customers can take readings straight from their Smart Meters. They can't, though, alter the frequency that meters automatically send us readings. In most cases, readings come to us once a month. Customers can choose to vary this and go to either daily or half hourly readings but they need to contact us to opt in to this arrangement.
Thought it might help if I make the distinction between Smart Meters and the displays that come with them. The meters themselves are the important piece of kit. They record usage like conventional meters. The main difference is they send us the readings automatically rather than relying on the customer or our representatives. The principal aim is to increase the accuracy of bills by reducing the number of estimated readings used. Smart Meters are in no way dependant on the displays and will continue to work and send us readings whether or not displays are used.
The display is an extra tool that we hope customers will use to give then a better understanding of how they're using energy. As above, displays don't give an exact picture but act as a guide. Hopefully, by raising awareness, it'll help customers save money by saving energy. Totally understand, a lot of MSE users are up to speed with such things and maybe find displays a bit of a waste but there are others not quite so savvy who we hope will benefit from the information available through the displays.
For instance, displays show customers what they're using at any given time or over a longer period. This can be seen as kWh, CO2 emissions or in money terms but without discounts and VAT. Readings can be seen on both the meter itself and the display.
Hope this helps Sosumi but for more information check out the links F&W kindly posted. Lots of useful stuff on them. Alternatively, let me know and I'll do my best to help.
