I find it amazing that a 13 min call from lanarote to Canada can cost less one pound.
Yet the same call of about 15 mins to Canada can cost just under 6 pounds in the UK.

You're doing it wrong.
Using another method (a dial through provider with an 03 access number) the cost from the UK is zero.0 -
yes Canada is zero just the cost of dialling an uk 03 number (which can be part of ur minutes allowance)

You can even get access at no extra charge via 01 numbers (No need to open an account.) Only no extra charge if you are using inclusive minutes.
See: http://callstunt.com/uk/destinations (0161 Access Number included in UK Inclusive Minutes).0 -
The CallStunt web page could be accused of being misleading by omission.
The 0161 access number is described as '£0.00 per minute'. This relies on the caller having an inclusive allowance covering 01, 02 and 03 numbers. The vast majority of callers will have this. For those who do not have an inclusive allowance, calls to 01, 02 and 03 numbers are charged at 'geographic rate'. This can be up to 12p per minute from landlines or up to 55p per minute from mobiles.
The various 084 and 087 numbers are shown with prices such as '£0.01 per minute' and '£0.13 per minute'. This omits an important point. These particular prices are all '... PLUS your phone provider's Access Charge'. This can be up to 12p per minute from landlines or up to 55p per minute from mobiles making a total call price of up to 25p per minute from landlines or up to 68p per minute from mobiles.0 -
The regulations don't require the networks provide roaming calls to non-EU/EEA countries at reduced rates.
