same here - I have skimmed and buy in 4 pint bottles but it takes me quite a while to finish so is regularly past the date. There isn't much in skimmed to go off really.

I ate double cream that was three months out of date. Nothing happened.

I don't look at use by dates at my parent's house as they freeze milk to defrost and use a month or two later.

curdled / off booby milk definitely has its own uniquely disgusting taste. Sometimes just freezing it and shaking (as opposed to a gentle swirl) was enough to 'turn' it.

  • Does powdered milk count? I think my pack is probably years beyond the date on pack... :undecided

I raised a thread on this a while ago, mine got to 9 days over date and was still fine.

I regularly use double cream a week and more past its use by date.

I drink it unless it smells/tastes off. If it doesn't smell or taste bad it's clearly not bad and won't hurt

TBH I go with the smell, taste test and if any doubt I use it in a tea of coffee and see if it goes funny in the heat or not.

My eldest still remembers his gran giving him cereal with off milk that was actually unopened and in date so tbh the date means little but a guidence.

As above have bought short date milk and used until I could tell it was off, certainly a week over easily, same with cream. I also agreed about cravendale got 3 bottles on short date a couple of years back and reckon we used it for weeks after the date.

  • I guess we're not talking about UHT here... Once found a quart of that at the back of the cupboard that was over three years past it's best before - Tasted absolutely fine. You really could not distinguish it from a new one. I deduce from this that the stuff lasts forever.
