I stayed with a friend recently, and on September 2 she was still happily drinking from a 4pt bottle of organic milk with a use by date of August 15th. I don't stick rigidly to use by dates, and I understand the sniff test, but I couldn't bring myself to drink milk 17 days past its recommended date. We're old friends and she didn't mind me opening a fresh bottle, although she did laugh at me.

Would you have drunk it?

  • I've probably drunk older, but I don't know. I don't look at the date or perform the sniff test as all milk smells 'off' to me. I only have it in other things, so I just ask OH if it is fine and go about my business. We have noticed it lasts particularly well when we buy it from a certain shop. Our fridge is also colder than it needs to be, which I think helps.

I regularly buy rtc blue milk at 10p/6pints and it lasts well over a week longer than the use by date. I find that blue milk lasts longer than the others.
  • Buy Cravendale- lasts forever and farmers get a fairer price

  • It's the first time I've baulked at something just because of a use by date - my brain said drink it but my guts said no!

  • It passed the sniff test?

If it passed the 'does not form dubious globules in the tea' test, I'd probably have drunk it - and if it passed the test whilst I was in another room utterly unaware, almost certainly!

Milk's probably not a good example as compared to many other products it's so obvious when it's gone off and so conversely when it hasn't. If it smelled fine and didn't float about in my tea then I'd drink it. I buy my milk weekly, check the dates when I buy it and it's almost always finished long before that date so not a problem I'm likely to have often.
  • My Mothers milk. She was about 29 at the time!

If it passed the sniff and taste tests, yes, I would.

I can't comment on the "dubious globules in tea or coffee" test, as I drink both without milk.:D
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
  • when our DD was younger we'd freeze expressed milk for reheating and bottle feeding... some of that went off and honestly off booby milk is one of the worst things I've ever tasted. and the taste lingers too! urgh!!
School is important, but Rugby is importanter.
  • I buy 4 pint ones as so much cheaper and it's always been fine well beyond the date.

The higher the fat content the quicker it goes off.

Recently I left some opened skimmed milk in the fridge and went away on holiday. It was fine three weeks beyond date.

Why tip money down the sink????:T
