The great line rental scam

  • Why can't BT do the same and have a product of BB only ?
If you don't rent the line, how do you think the broadband signal will get to your house?

BT could offer a "BB only" service, but it would still have the line rental bundled into the total cost.

    I suppose they could

Earlier in this thread insure I read that the BT cable has 2 wires, one for the phone and one for the Internet.

Yet Virgin are supplying just a co.axial cable to me that can take multiple services..

I thinking the landline nowadays is a bit of a cash cow to the companies

BT lines do not have separate wires for phone and broadband.

Whoever told you that was pulling your plonker. It all uses a single pair.

What you saw earlier in the thread was me being correected that VM is actually two cables - one for phone and another for broadband. But AFAIK, they always install both, even if youve taken broadband only.

Technically it does have two wires, as it is twisted pair, but to transmit any signal needs two wires. The voice signal and the broadband signal are at different frequencies so share the same pair of wires and the microfilter prevents crosstalk.

The BT infrastructure was designed to transmit a 3kHz voice signal (basically what the old dialup modems used), not megabits of data. ADSL and VDSL use parts of the frequency spectrum that the cabling wasn't designed for, which is why the range is limited, but it still needs that cable back to the cabinet / exchange and the subscriber has to rent it. Doesn't matter if they send broadband data over it or a voice signal, still got to pay for it.

The coax used by VM is designed for the frequencies used by the TV service and broadband service, which is why the fall of in speed with distance is not seen with them. They still run a separate twisted pair of their own for their phone service though.

In the Comms sector, It seems this does not apply and I deem that to be unfair.

    Life isn't fair though.

Here's a list of things I find unfair:
    • The fact that as an honest working person, someone who is claiming benefits can claim more than me.
    • Expenses.
    • Commuters get shafted by high rail fares.
    • As a driver, I pay way over the odds for diesel/petrol.
    • The house I bought wasn't quite as described and there's nothing I can do about it.
    • I paid for something. A week later, the price dropped and I couldn't claim any money back.
    • Something else I had broke during the warranty period. The company replaced it, but the 1 year warranty didn't start again from the point they sent it out to me.
