The bios doesn't see it either (I think!), neither using list disk on the command prompt.

The exact model is hp pavilion 15 e078ea

    This is what I have

Strangely enough, I just switched it on with the usb that has w10 on it, and it has booted straight into Windows with the same settings as it had yesterday before it went wrong again!

Continued to work with the usb removed, have tried to restart it and it has again booted straight into Windows.

That's me even more confused that I was half an hour ago!

After shutting it down I have the same issue, booting again using the usb has loaded Windows. Leads me to an uneducated theory that it may be the battery, as it is fine when the power is not cut as in a restart or sleep, but last night when it was sleeping the battery died so the power was cut hence it forgot the settings?

    Any credence to this theory?

The only battery that would lose settings would be the CMOS battery on the motherboard. When it starts up is the date and time correct? If it is, then it is not the CMOS.

Just checked and both bios and the time in Windows is correct.

Boot from your USB W10 installation with the original drive in place. Once in windows go Control panel > computer management > disk management and please report back what you see.

    for example:

Your drive appears to be detected and actually mounted, I suspect it's a corrupted or misconfigured efi boot.

Before you do the next step, in case anything goes wrong I'd advising getting any important files off the original HDD and back up.

Repeat this step but choose repair:

I have W10 on a USB, but when I boot using that, it tries to install and I get to the option where I can select either repair or custom install etc.

Additionally you have an ancient version of the EFI BIOS (F.07), the current version for the laptop is F.27 Rev.A

specifically this download assuming 64bit :

Download and run the above (sp76846.exe) to update the EFI BIOS
