It is a HP Pavilion...
If you're ever asked to provide this information again it might be best to be more specific. Do you have any idea how many different Pavilion models HP have produced over the last 21 years since the first ones? No, me neither, but they currently have 13 on their UK website, I'd guess that the total runs into the hundreds if not thousands.

The kind of issue (software) is not specific to any make or model of PC or laptop.
Its a software issue and would be fixed the same way regardless of model.0 -

It wasn't me that asked the question, just pointing out that the answer wouldn't have been of much help had the model been significant.0 -
Point noted thank you, however when the laptop was switched on this morning the same problem is back, so my thinking is the HDD is goosed?
Going to try the other drive and see if it solves it once and for all
And I've tried the other drive and it is not detecting that again, so I have finally admitted defeat and resigned myself to thinking it is out of my remit.0 -

Quite possibly, if you are going to replace the drive I'd suggest replacing with an SSD on the grounds of better reliability and speed, however they do cost more per GB of storage space.
It's worth confirming if there are issues with the drive, if you have access to a desktop machine (alternatively a caddy for the drive) where you can plug in and read the drive then you can use a program such as crystaldiskinfo to interrogate the SMART parameters.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

I'm just confused that if the original hdd is goosed, how come the other one doesn't work either?
My wife is going to ask her IT bods at work if they can have a look, although they have done that once before and it was 'fixed' but the same issue happened again. I'll give them the other hdd I've got to see if they can make use of that instead.0 -

As in the laptop cannot see it. The laptop cannot see either drive although they are both confirmed as working in another laptop.
Th IT bod at work is going to have a look, he says it might be the BIOS battery failing so it forgets it's settings, but will know more when he has it in front of him.0 -
As in the laptop cannot see it..
When you say "see it" have you actually gone into the BIOS settings and seen if the HDD is being detected ? Booting into Windows is nothing to do with being detected.

Ignore the bits about secure boot, you just want to get into the BIOS and see if the HDD is detected.
Additionally I reiterate my question of earlier, what is the exact model please ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0
