This stuff shouldn't be thrown away after 2.5 years. That would be terribly wasteful.
This is what I said. The computer hasn't lasted a 'reasonable' amount of time IMO.
Any progress OP?0 -

You pay an extortionate price, for a machine that is completely locked down hardware and software.
So that they can extort you further when you need any work doing on said machine.
I really cant understand why people buy into this !!!! !!
Its like some kind of brainwashing by apple ..
It hurts - but just accept your loss and buy a decent PC that you can actually service yourself very easily, Install what you like onto it, and add/change hardware as you see fit - instead of having to take it to an "authorised apple service provider" - aka money printer ..
That isn't true and hasn't been for the long time, since Apple moved from PowerPC to Intel architecture.
Macs are just another brand of PC and you can load any operating system you want that will run on any other PC.
As for the hardware the iMac is more like a giant laptop than a traditional desktop or tower and are no more difficult to work on as long as you know what end of a screwdriver to hold.
Access is through the screen which is held in place by magnets.
They aren't everyone's choice just like some people choose Ford as opposed to Merc or BMW.One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I wouldn't have anything other than a Mac. We had the first, the little Classic, in school. I bought an original iMac, then a G4 in 2005 - it's still going.
I have an iPad and a MacBook, too. Apple support have been brilliant over the years - recently after ungraded when tiscali email wouldn't work.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

But a sony vaio motherboard would have cost you around 50 squid off ebay.
And you could have fitted it yourself, or at least paid someone £20 to do it for you ..
Making it worth repairing.
To someone who knows their way round a laptop thand n maybe. The irony of your comments is that the Vaio was sent off to the company I bought it from and had 3 year cover to repair it, and they opted to give me an £800 credit as refund at I used to buy the MacBook.
I got brave with changing the HDD in the macbook, and still had a game in installing the OS, but it was manageable
I get the frustrations about products now sealed up, however a friend of mine who works in Solihull Touchwood Apple Store said so much time was wasted by people booking macs in for repairs, only for engineers to open them up to find 3rd party non-approved parts that are the broken bits and not actually covered by Apple. Not the sole reason to seal the, up, profits will play a part in any multinational, but it must be annoying for any employee0 -
Speaking of bluetooth headphones, Picked up a set of Bone conducting headphones last week.
Feels weird wearing them, your hearing music ANS what's going on around you!! (just don't play anything with a thumping bass line! you'll feel it!!)Laters

I'm using a mid-2011 Mac mini right now. (I wouldn't buy a newer non-upgradable one though!)
You know this £50 for 3 years Applecare thing - if you get a 2 year warranty, then it's really 50 for 1 year add-on, isn't it?
Also, on a point of order, the OP says if you want the thing to last more than 2 years... Well, it did, didn't it?
I have to say though, that I don't particularly go for AIO (all-in-one) machines; they're a a bit too all-your-eggs-in-one-basket for me.0
