Nope! People of all ages and both genders attend my gyms. There is one chap I see every day at 6.30 with white hair so no cut-off whatsoever.0

I do think gyms are often quite daunting places for "older" people who have not been used to going before. They could probably do a lot more to encourage an older age group to use their facilities. I have looked at a few websites and they never have pictures of anyone that looks over 25.0

Don't stress it at the gym.
There will be all types.
Before you sign up,enquire if they do day passes, free test days or the like.
There will always be fitter, younger, stronger or whatever people.
It matters not a jot. You are paying just like they are. Concentrate on yourself.
If you are based in Edinburgh then gives fitness soul a look.Very friendly boutique gym.0 -
Thank you for all the replies.
I think I'll go and have a look around, the idea of a day pass sounds like a good idea, I'll look into that too.0 -
I'm a 33 year old woman and the people at my gym vary so widely it's lovely, it's a The Gym Group gym so I pay 17.99 a month and it's 24 hours 7 days a week.
It does what i need it to and you can do a days taster if you like and they encourage you to try their trainers for a free appt, it's working for me though the one thing I really wish they did have was a pool as i like to mix up my exercise a bit.
I would say that the first couple of times I went when it was particularly busy I found myself feeling a little self conscious but it was all my feelings if you see what I mean, everyone there is there for their own goals whether it's me losing a bit of weight or someone training for a run or a bodybuilder using the free weights it's all a nice atmosphere.
have a look around your local gyms and chat to people and i'm sure you'll find a nice place to spend some time and keep your interest going0 -
Never to old for the gym! I'm usually the only under 60 there (I'm 28!) during the day. It's not until 'after work' times the client Base age decrease's. I'd second MFP. I also like swimming and the same goes for the age group.0

People of all ages and sizes use the gym in my experience.
I would however before signing up into a long contract check that it's for you and that you will enjoy going and use it regularly.
You can use free day passes and also another useful site is Payasugym is an excellent site where you can buy day or monthly passes for gyms all across the country. Check the referrals board for 50% off your first pass.
You don't have to join a gym to stay fit and lose weight, you can do on your own. You could do the weekly 5k park runs for example, or do workouts in your home many of which can be found on YouTube.
Hope this helpsFor thousands of people this Christmas, their must-have gift is far more vital than the latest gadget or toy – it’s blood. Please don’t let the festivities and cold weather prevent you from giving them the ultimate gift… give blood.0 -
Honestly nobody cares what you are doing at the gym. Case in point I used to notice this overweight guy and was happy he was there trying hard. I was actually sad when he stopped coming.
Go for it you will enjoy it!0 -
No one's too old for the gym, and trust me, gym's aren't full of super fit people. mainstream gym's I've been to have been full of all sorts of people just trying to keep active! Joining the gym was the best decision I ever made and I've even made a couple of new friends there along the way!I'm usually using a phone, so excuse my spelling please!0

It is possible to lose weight without the gym but the issue is that you will lose muscle unless you also do some resistance exercise to keep it so although you will be thinner you may not be entirely happy with your 'look'0
