Hi, I was wondering if people could give me a bit of advice?
In June I bought a Garmin vivosmart hr, I've been getting on really well with it, since I bought it I've walked 1,519,960 steps, it says that's 673.3 miles. I've lost a few pounds, not as much as I'd like to have lost, or need to for that matter. I find myself trying to beat the watch most days, I'm also walking more to beat the connections in my list, sad I know.
I've started to think maybe, just maybe, it's time to try a gym, I'm a 53yr old female, 5'2 and about 3 stone overweight, you've no idea how hard that was to write and how mortified and upset I'm feeling.
Do you think I'm too old for a gym?

Hi I am a 64 year old female 5 ft 2 in and need to loose 2 stone, never been to a gym in my life always worked in retail so on my feet all day, but now retiring so needed to rethink.
I joined gymphobics a female only gym, its a 30 mins circuit and have been going for 2 months ...lost 8 inch and 6lbs.
so really pleased.0 -
There is no such thing as too old! A lady where I go is 59, has gone from size 16 to a size 8 & her illnesses have cleared up. She is now in amazing shape, lifts her bodyweight & goes on & on. I am 37 & have been training for 19 months now, 3x per week, occasionally four & it's helped in all areas. I too can deadlift what I weigh & it's amazing the changes, good luck!0

I'm not going to tell you how much weight I need to lose. I'm older than both of you, and have only recently started to go to a gym. I've also finally learned to swim. I go to the council one, still tossing up whether to join a private one. I'm logging all my food on My Fitness Pal in order to keep to 1200 calories.
I can't say I enjoy the gym, but I like the way I feel afterwards. I enjoy the swimming though still not much good.0 -
I wouldn't say you were too old either.
Maybe consult your doctor before starting more agressive exercise than walking.
And also maybe consider a slimming class.
Good luck.
I was almost 3 stone overweight (and a tad less than 5' tall) over 13 years ago, just before I hit 50.
I followed Slimming World using my sister's books and also bought a cross trainer which I still use most days.
I've kept most of the weight off too (maybe half a stone too much at the moment).
Good luck0 -
Thank you for all the replies.
Sadly there isn't a gymophobics near me. The gym I was thinking about does have a ladies only smaller gym inside the main gym. It doesn't have a pool but to be honest I can't see me going swimming any time soon.
I don't eat pastries, cakes, biscuits, bread, nothing that's junk food really so I can't understand why the weight isn't shifting. I've had blood tests done but nothing's come back, so I just don't know.
Today I've walked 16947 steps, that works out at 7.36 miles.0 -

No need to answer this, but is 1,200 going on your BMR? Nobody should really eat below this & how would you decrease calories as you lose weight? I lose weight on 1.675 a day really well & that is with a massive deficit (bigger than needed due to health issues)
Sorry you probably know about that & have worked it out with a trainer (or maybe are one) but lots seem to decrease calories to 1,200 when it's not a good thing to do & definitely isn't needed! Even 5ft tall would lose weight on more, so might be worth recalculating?
Don't mean to patronise tho but just am concerned in case you just picked the number randomly x0 -

Myfitnesspal is really good for tracking what you eat. Do you eat the right amount of calories (based on BMR & not something low like 1300 etc). Do you eat lots of protein & regularly? Cardio often isn't very good for weight loss, weight training tends to be best (tho anything is great & beats sitting doing nothing!) No need to cut junk food out, just a bit more good & a bit less bad, i'd go crazy without my bad foods!0 -

I think I might have a look st the myfitnesspal. I don't tend to count the calories, most of what I eat is vegetable based, if I see another mound of cauliflower or broccoli rice I think I'll cry! Today I've had cereal with plain yogurt and semi skimmed milk, at lunch time it was a protein roll, quorn fillet and a bit of salad, this evening it was a tomato omelette with the dreaded cauliflower rice, I snacked on one banana and some melon.
My daughter is a bit of a fitness freak, she prepares a lot of the meals, the ones she doesn't prepare she watches what I'm cooking like a hawk, lol. She's bought me some protein shake, but I'm not sure about it, she says I need to drink more water, not enough water slows down the metabolism apparently.0 -
Please don't feel embarrassed to join a gym. I'm one of those regular have been a gym member for decades, look like a pro but I'm no different to anyone and when I see someone new, whatever their age, how overweight they are, how slow they start off I always think good on them because I know how hard it is to make that step.
Gyms are not just for the super sporty they are for anyone who wants to get fitter so don't ever think you have any lesser place there than a younger fitter woman.0 -
UKTigerlily, My Fitness Pal told me to do 1200 calories. Occasionally I go below and it tells me off; but I reckon that this is offset by occasionally going over.
I think it's useful to track the calories. I am getting used to eating less and better, so should be good for keeping the weight off once lost.
Brick wall, The members at my local gym are not all super fit and gorgeous. You have no need to fear that they would be laughing at you, as they will all be too busy doing their own exercises.0
