Maybe he doesn't want any comeback if something goes wrong with the car in a few months. I presume you saved a few ££s by using a mobile mechanic so you get what you pay for. I would imagine his work is fine but no bells and whistles as far as paperwork goes.

If he's VAT registered then he's obliged to issue a VAT receipt.

If he isn't, he probably should be.

Either way, mention of HMRC may produce a result.
Should he? I doubt that a mobile mechanic will have enough of a turnover to need to be VAT registered.

Your only required to issue vat receipts where requested to another business that is vat registered. If the other party isn't vat registered there is no requirement.

Mentioning hmrc will result in op looking silly. How many mobile mechanics with overheads limited to a van and some tools will even get close to the threshold? No many I imagine.

Although I do think it's shoddy not to give op a receipt, costs him next to nothing. He's just lost a customer over the sake of a bit of printed paper

Just fill in the space in the service book with the mileage, handwrite his name and trading address, add a note "waterpump replaced" or something, sign with a squiggle, and attach the card receipt to the page somehow.

You had the service done, he did it, you paid him, so just record it.

If you are that bothered about a stamped version, treat him to a nice new one by ordering him one on eBay for £10, stamp your book with it, and then you can present him with it as a "tip" for his good work if you want, so he is never without a stamp again. :D
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Thanks for help, Had the service paper work pushed through letterbox early this morning.

I picked a mobile mechanic because of convenience, I had a child recovering from an operation and couldn't get to a garage.

The price was literally a tenner cheaper, it wasn't a money factor in picking him.

All is good and well now and I'm listing my car with full service history this afternoon.
