Is there more than one top account paying high interest? Unlike some here who have 5 or more accounts running at any one time I choose only one that fulfils all the criteria - I don't want to lose money!

Surely the criteria include making as much money as possible in a tight market ?

How are people losing money if they get 3%, 4%, 5% or even 6% with just a little effort ? These accounts aren't based on shares or assets that can gain or lose value.

Thanks for your info but I'd never even heard of National Counties! I guess there must be many more smaller BSs that I haven't heard of.

You might find this link useful https://www.bsa.org.uk/about-us/members-of-the-bsa

There are less than 50 Building Societies now left in the UK. The above link also throws up a couple of Credit Unions.

Some Building Societies do restrict membership to geographical locations.

    Yes. See here.

You're more likely to lose money by only having one account, although the FSCS has reduced that risk.

Sounds suspicious to me even though ML recommends it and it has the £75,000 assured sum.

There isn't anything suspicious about the Family Building Society. As people have already stated it is part of the National Counties Building Society. They are FSCA protected up to £75,000.

I have money deposited with them, and whenever I have contacted them they are very friendly and efficient.

My only problem is that they don't have a physical address. As retireeabove says they have no branches and can only be contacted by phone and internet. It's a nice interest rate they offer but due for review this month anyway. Will see how that turns out.

Are you suspicious of the likes of First Direct too? Ever shopped with Amazon?

The Family Building Society do have a physical address, and they can be contacted at 30 Church Street, Epsom, Surrey. I have written to them there, they contact you straight away (by post if you prefer).

The ISA pays 1.22% and is at the top of Martin Lewis's list; also is covered by the £75,000 assurance.

Email received today : Market Tracker Isa (Issue 1) .. rate will decrease from 1.22% to 1.09% on 01/10/2016.

The same rate decrease also applies to Market Tracker (1).
