    It's not asked by employers all the time because they hold all the cards. They can simply refuse it. The onus is on the potential employee to check as they are the one who is going to lose out. They don't have the employer "over a barrel" at all; they just think they do.


    Really. You mean they would get rid of potentially the best candidate due to their incompetency in not asking a bog standard job interview question.

    I'm sure they would all love to go through the whole interview process again. Tell you what, I bet they won't forget to mention the "Have you got any holidays booked question" next time would they?

    The best candidate would not need to be prompted about something so important. If a person can't take responsibility for their own obligations they're not going to make for employee of the month!

    How would asking the question help them get the best candidate?
    To me it seems quite the opposite - If you as an employer don't want to allow certain holidays you ask the question if you are not going to offer the job to anyone with long/christmas holidays booked. Or you don't ask the question and offer the job to the best candidate and let the candidate have the choice whether to cancel the holiday or turn down the job.

    They wouldn't "get rid" of anyone. They would however accept the employee's resignation, if they chose to resign rather than cancel their holiday, if the holiday was a problem. And they would think themselves lucky to get rid of this idiot early.

    Why should they care? It's actually very simple. It is always the responsibility of an employee to ask for holiday. And the employer can refuse it. We are supposedly talking about a senior member of staff who should know those basic facts. So if you already have a holiday booked, you mention it at the time of the offer. Because it is part of your decision making process when you decide to accept or reject the offer. If this senior member of staff doesn't know that, one might wonder if they have really made the right decision. Interviews are not a exact scienc, and people make mistakes and appoint the wrong person. We all know that. So maybe the employer is having second thoughts about a senior member of staff who didn't know to do what most people would know to do - ask about a pre-booked holiday.
