Meningitis vaccination

She should be able to get this at her GP's surgery.

Yup, receptionists can be little Hitlers. We were told by one that we could only have a doctors appointment if it was for 'a life or death situation'. I so wanted to tell her that no, that's what 999 is for, but I didn't, for fear of her being even more obstructive and rude than she already was.
I wonder if it's worth the uni's actually setting up a place on site where students can get their jabs done.0 -
No, we're not in Scotland, Ive seen the emails advising getting the vaccination, it's states you can get it at your G.P's.
I've told her to ring the G.P's tomorrow and try talking to someone else, if not we'll make an appointment at either boots or superdrug, I'm just surprised at the receptionist to be honest.0 -

From what you've written, your daughter is already a university student returning for her second or third year? In that case the receptionist isn't wrong - but you could contact the Practice Manager or a GP if you'd like to discuss it.
It's her second year, the receptionist didn't ask what year she was in, just said that the uni are wrong? I've told her to ring tomorrow and see what someone else says. Just seems strange to be honest, others she went to uni with last year haven't had any problems with their G.P's.0 -

She's going to ring student welfare tomorrow to see what they say, this G.P's is less than 10 mile from the uni so I'd think they'll be having a few more coming through the doors soon.0 -
Here is a copy of the document sent to GP Practices, which outlines the Men ACWY vaccination programme:
https://www.england.nhs.uk/commissioning/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2016/04/Menfreshers-2016-17.pdf
which I've taken from the Meningitis Research Foundation's website, linked here to their page on teenagers and Uni fresher's vaccination information:
https://www.england.nhs.uk/commissioning/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2016/04/Menfreshers-2016-17.pdf
And here is the MRF's guide if you've got problems accessing the vaccination:

I used to work in a medical centre (within a private workplace, not part of the NHS in any way) and we sometimes had problems getting hold of stocks of ACWY. But even if that's the case for your daughter's GP, the receptionist should just say that and give you alternative locations rather than spout rubbish.0

I expect your daughter misunderstood the receptionist. Uni students are expected to register with a GP in their local area because they are not a resident of the local CCG any longer, their residence from an NHS perspective is that of the local CCG.
Where the Uni is wrong is to ask pupils to get the vaccine from their 'home' GP. I can understand if they wrote this to pupils about to enrol in their first year, so not yet resident of the local area, but once they have started their course, they are not the responsibility of the local CCG and therefore the practice any longer. That of course assuming your daughter has moved away for Uni.0 -

What else could she have done.. could have just asked for an appointment with a nurse I suppose.
Our surgery now takes online bookings for non-urgent appointments, thank goodness, so it's the doctor and not some uppity admin clerk who decides whether I need to be seen at the surgery.0
