Meningitis vaccination

Hi, I hope someone can give me some advice.

My daughter (21) is at uni, she's going back in just over a weeks time. She's had a lot of emails from the uni advising her to get the meningitis vaccine, everyone she went to uni with has been advised the same due to the fact there has been a high number of cases in the area. The uni are planning a big campaign to raise awareness and advise everyone gets the vaccination during freshens week, meningitis is a serious thing. So, she went to the doctors to ask at the reception about booking an appointment. The receptionist is saying the info my daughter has is wrong, according to her the emails and campaign by the uni is wrong? Anyway, she's come away from the doctors unable to get an appointment to get the vaccination, is the receptionist entitled to refuse her the opportunity to get the vaccination? Others she's at uni have either had it or have appointments to get it this week.

I've looked online and I know she can get it elsewhere but, I'm just curious as to whether or not the receptionist has the right to refuse her the choice of having it there at her own G.P's
Thanks

GPs are private entities and are free to refuse treatment, but you can complain to management and ultimately the CQC.
  • From the NHS website.

She should be able to get this at her GP's surgery.

Could it be that the info is wrong for the area you live in but correct for the area your daughters uni is in?

    Edit
Just seen from the posts above that your receptionist is just plain wrong. Tell your daughter to print out those pages and take them back to the surgery!

It's not the refusing treatment that I'm wondering about, it's the fact that the receptionist is saying the info from uni is wrong? Does she have the right to do that?

    Thanks

We live in the same area, I've seen the info and it is advising getting the vaccination. I'm aware she can get it at other places, I'm just a bit surprised by the receptionists stance.

Well she's expressing an opinion, which isn't a crime. (well it could be negligent misstatement)

    But again you can complain.

Are you in Scotland by any chance

    Freshers
Scotland will not be running a Universities freshers programme this year. Due to the success of the MenACWY programme offered to all 14-18 year olds in Scotland during 2015/16, the majority of Scottish entrants to university will have already been immunised and therefore there isn't a need for a specific freshers programme this year in Scotland.

Scottish university entrants starting university this Autumn and who missed the opportunity to get the vaccine last year, should contact their GP Practice who will advise them if it is clinically appropriate for their particular circumstances.

Unvaccinated students coming from other parts of the UK to study in Scotland, should make sure they get the vaccine before they travel to Scotland as there is no guarantee the MenACWY vaccine will be available at Scottish University health centres and GP practices.
  • From NHS Choices website about Men ACWY Vaccination:
"The highest risk of meningitis is in the first year of university, particularly the first few months. As the Men ACWY vaccine is being targeted at those at highest risk, students in their second year or above of university are not included in this vaccination programme."

From what you've written, your daughter is already a university student returning for her second or third year? In that case the receptionist isn't wrong - but you could contact the Practice Manager or a GP if you'd like to discuss it.
