We aren't saying it's nice, I've personally been in the tge same position and nearly passed out spending 2 hours scrubbing a filthy bathroom only days after giving birth. However there's not a lot you can do about dirt and something as minor as full bins and stains. Something bigger is harder to argue with, such as furniture and junk left behind, old cars on the drive or a full garage, malicious damage, etc. You are going to end up paying your solicitor to write to theirs and if they refuse to pay anything you'll need to take them to court. Financially it's not worth the outlay unless it's something that's going to cost yiu and a judge will definitely agree with you.

Yep, we moved into our house last year and the people we bought of left it like a pigsty, it was filthy. And so filthy we had to have the oven removed and replaced...and then we came across a toilet brush in a condition that made us sick. They were Solicitors too, I know I shouldn't have made an assumption but I really didn't think they live like pigs. We've gutted the place to remove all evidence of them.

And the biggest laugh was the blurb for it "...move in condition" Yes, for pigs, I'd agree.

When we moved into our place the previous tenants left loads of stuff (even though the house should have been empty). Pots and pans, old curtains, all sorts. Didn't even think to contact the solicitors/EAs, you just get it all into bin bags and take to the dump (or charity shop).

There were urine stained carpets in both bathrooms and there was allsorts wrong. Its just a case of getting on with it. Unless you're moving into a brand new home you're likely to do a "deep clean" when you move in whatever the condition of the house - I imagine?

    Thanks for the thoughts.

Like I say, we're not really expecting a show home standard, just didnt' expect the amount there was.

However, as others have said, we're lucky we didnt need to move in that day. In fact, the old owner only just finished moving at 4:45pm, leaving just 15 mins for them to drop the keys off at the estate agents!

I wonder if we did have a removal van waiting then what would have happened - considering they had over a week of preparation and they were self moving (IE, no van).

I don't mind working and cleaning (the cleaning aisle in the supermarket is my favourite!), just could have done without it as it means the stuff we actually planned to do before moving can no longer be done.

FTB and lessons learned and all that.

Although the flush that has been broken wasn't like that when we viewed. Just hope I can get my hard hat on and fix it!

It does sound like they just underestimated how much there was to do and how long it would take. I doubt they intended to leave it without giving it a clean.

People we bought from first time, took advantage of the fact that we were in rented and not moving in that day, and like you we didn't get the keys until nearly closing time. I remember making several calls to the EA during the afternoon to see what was happening. However they did leave it clean enough to be able to sit on the carpet to eat fish and chips that evening!

It's not great having to clean up someone else's filth - but soon it will just be a tale to tell. Don't let it spoil your new home, you will get there.

I hope the OP has read the other thread regarding the weird dad otherwise they would be totally puzzled by the number of 'thanks' in post #6!

  • You might find using white vinegar on the shower will help. 47p a bottle from Asda. Bleach won't be as good. Vinegar is a mild acid and deals with mould/dirt very well. You will have to do some scrubbing as well though.

After trying several mould removers/cleaners and having no chance of shifting the ingrained mould in the shower, bath and window frames after tenants moving out I thought I'd try Cillit Bang black mould remover and was amazed at the result. Shifted it in an hour on most of the affected areas only the shower took 2 treatments.

Gardener, I was going to say read and enjoy, but it might be more appropriate to say read and be flabbergasted.
