How many miles should a new car have on the clock

Courtesy of Toyota in their owner's handbook.
"To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended: For the first 300 km (186 miles): Avoid sudden stops. For the first 800 km (500 miles): Do not tow a trailer. For the first 1000 km (621 miles): • Do not drive at extremely high speeds. • Avoid sudden acceleration. • Do not drive continuously in low gears. • Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods."0 -
constant speeds are not good for engines as the bores can get an unhealthy wear pattern: glazed bores.
Just drive like a hire car from new. I have run company cars for large mileages and thrashd them from new with no issues.0 -
I just gradually increase the revs each week, week 1 steady, week 2 a bit harder, week 3 a bit harder again. If your planning on trading it in at 3 years i wouldn't worry, if your planning on keeping it long term then look after it better!0

From the horses mouth, ie someone who designs BMW engines, just got their new BMW and were going to do 1000k steady, change the oil to the engineering departments preferred brand (not what BMW put in!) then see what it can do.
I know some cars have long oil change intervals but that one would put the oil companies out of business.
You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
My new Seat Leon was delivered on May 10th this year to my office in West London. By the evening of the 12th it was outside a hotel in Lyon, France, where we had travelled to watch a rugby match. Car didn't miss a beat although I was sympathetic to the fact that it was a new engine so took it a little easy on the journey.0
