How many miles should a new car have on the clock

before you can do constant speeds.

Buying a new car 5 days before holiday which will require motorway driving. Is it a myth about not driving at constant speed before a certain mileage

Thanks

There is no running in on a modern engine. Enjoy your new car!

Best bet is to speak to your dealer

It was never the case that you couldn't do "constant speeds" with a new car and as has already been posted modern car engines don't require a "running in" period as such but it is advisable not to thrash/over rev you car for the first couple of thousand miles but with most driving you wont be doing this anyway.

I think engineering in the modern age is much more precise than it was a few years back, hence the lack of requirement to run in.
  • As others have said, there is not really a running in procedure for modern cars, however, your handbook will probably recommend a sympathetic driving style and not taking the revs above a certain point for the first couple of hundred miles.

Totally agree, "sympathetic driving style" is a very good way of putting it.

    Agree from me as well.

From the horses mouth, ie someone who designs BMW engines, just got their new BMW and were going to do 1000k steady, change the oil to the engineering departments preferred brand (not what BMW put in!) then see what it can do. ;)

A few years ago the day after getting a new car we did about 1,000 miles on a holiday.

Bedding in brakes etc is just as important as what you do to the engine. Also check tyre pressures.

Definitely do this. My last two cars have come from the dealer with all 4 tyres at the same pressure, when there should have been a 5/6 psi difference between front and back.

Check the owners manual, there is more to the car than just the engine, brakes tyres etc, all have some sort of bedding period, in fact the long run is beneficial than the short hops to the shops for running in.
